FROM THE PRINCIPAL...TONY WHITE

Neuropsychiatrist, Dan Siegel, M.D., and parenting expert and "Mindsight" author, Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D., have partnered to write a couple of books on how we can best interact with and raise strong, successful, happy kids. Today, I'm going to focus on "The Whole Brain Child." After a week off with your Eagles, you may find that you can relate to their earliest lesson in the book: Surviving and Thriving. There are certainly days as parents where I feel like my wife and I are merely trying to survive our daughters' fussy dinners, unwanted bedtimes, and fighting over the same toy. However, as Siegel and Bryson say, we want to do more than survive; we want our kids to thrive.

In "The Whole Brain Child," Drs. Siegel and Bryson (Dan and Tina, as they call themselves throughout the book) teach us 12 whole brain strategies to nurture our children's developing minds. We learn to teach kids to SIFT through their Sensations, Images, Feelings, and Thoughts so they can focus on and understand what is happening inside when situations arise that are less than desirable. We're reminded to enjoy each other through play, laughter, and shared experiences. The final strategy I'll highlight today is one of the first in the book. We are taught to Connect and Redirect when our children are upset. We connect with their "right brain" through empathy, listening, a story, and validation of feelings, and then redirecting to the "left brain" once our child is more receptive so he or she can determine with us how to make amends.

If these ideas sound interesting to you, you're in luck. D303 is hosting a book study for parents and guardians. You can click here to register. Book pickup is December 9 at the D303 Board Room, and "study sessions" will be offered in late February and mid-March at the Baker Community Center and Fox Ridge LRC during the day and evening.

I hope your Eagles have enjoyed their first few days back after Thanksgiving Break as much as we have enjoyed having them back! Have a wonderful weekend, and let's always remember to: Be Kind, Be Respectful, and Be Problem-Solvers!

#BEKINDFOR25

Norton Creek wants to challenge all Eagles to Pay It Forward as it is the season to give & be thankful. We challenge you to foster continuous acts of kindness for the 25 school days leading up to International Day of Acceptance. Beginning on Monday, December 2nd through January 21st, we have exactly 25 school days to encourage this challenge to take place. It is our plan to build school-wide understanding of acts of kindness, as well as to build disability awareness between December 2 - January 21. Please see the attached documents for additional details, including specifics on the food drive that Norton Creek is hosting beginning on Monday, December 2nd. Please check out #BeKindFor25 on social media to see what other students in our district are doing to support the challenge! Spreading knowledge of different, not less, & celebrating our differences.

We will be going outside for recess as long as the temperature (with wind chill) is above 0 F and it is not raining. With that in mind, please make sure your child is dressed to go outside on days when it is cold, snowy or windy. Students should bring outerwear to school in a bag to put on before recess. Please make sure they have hats, gloves, scarves, snow pants and boots if they want to play in the snow. Don’t forget to label your child’s outerwear so it does not end up in the Lost and Found.
