Notes from the Principal
Dear JWE Friends and Families,
“Spring is nature’s way of saying ‘Let’s Party!’” Robin Williams
Although the weather has been inconsistent, it’s been lovely to begin to see signs of spring here at JWE! Student’s artwork depicting scenes of spring filling our halls, our playgrounds getting more use, and lighter, brighter and longer days! We wish all of our children and their families a wonderful spring break filled with memory making adventures!
Cheers~
Lindy Sproul
JWE Principal
Important News
Erin's Law
In 2015, the Oregon legislature passed SB 856, also known as Erin’s Law. Erin’s Law requires the development and adoption of child sexual abuse prevention programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in all Oregon public schools. As in year’s past, our school has adopted a health curriculum that meets Erin’s Law requirements, as well as, the Oregon Health Education Standards.
In the next few months teachers and our school counselors will be teaching a minimum of 4 instructional lessons that are age appropriate and address the requirements of Erin’s Law which include:
1) healthy relationships,
2) the difference between appropriate touch and inappropriate touch,
3) knowing who a trusted adult is they can talk to,
4) refusal skills, saying “no” and identifying and recognizing sexual abuse.
The Gladstone School District acknowledges that parents and guardians are the primary health educators for their child and we are committed to partnering with you. In an effort to do this, you have the option of excluding your child from the Erin’s Law lessons. If you choose to do this, please complete the Erin’s Law Opt-Out Form by April 5, 2023. Students who are excused will be given an alternative assignment.
4th & 5th grade spring after school classes
Fun with Physics
Use everyday objects and experiments to become introduced to the wide world of physics! Learn how all parts of everyday life are influenced by physics, the study of energy and matter. Learn about electricity by building a battery out of lemons and limes, investigate the physics of light, color, and rainbows by creating a kaleidoscope. Become an expert in fluids by designing experiments to test buoyancy and pressure, learn why huge whales float but tiny coins sink. Use the concepts of energy and momentum to launch catapults and build air-powered cars and hovercrafts!

Cartoon & Caricature Drawing
View the world through a cartoonist's eyes. Discover the absurd and the entertaining in the ordinary aspects of life. This class provides an overview of the many formats, styles, and expressions of the cartoon medium. First, by writing gag lines, and then sketching, you will learn how to create single- and multiple-frame cartoons. You will also learn how to look at people, discover unique features and create caricature drawings. Throughout the class, the instructor will discuss many of the details associated with the world of cartooning. By the end of the class you will not only see the world from a new perspective, but also be able to express your views through drawing.

Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB)
Our fourth and fifth grade Oregon Battle of the Book (OBOB) students have been working for months towards the finish line, and we now have a date for the competition! It will take place on Wednesday April 12, 2023! Due to space restrictions, each student is limited to inviting just one adult to attend. Adults of the OBOB students will be sent a link to sign up to attend the event. Every year we are amazed at the students' hard work, dedication and teamwork that they put into this competition and this year is no exception.
John Wetten Elementary is hosting Career Day!
We are looking for 15-20 people in a variety of careers: mechanics, carpenters, dog trainers, doctors, hair stylists, chefs, yoga instructors, business owners, and much more. Our curious students need your experience!
Guests are invited to come to John Wetten Elementary on April 26, 2023, between the hours of 8:30-1:00. We ask guests to prepare a 15 minute presentation of their career. Here are some guidelines and talking points to assist you in preparing your presentations:
What do I do in my job?
What school subjects does my job use?
What training/higher education does my job require?
Visual demonstration of your job that includes tools you might use. Feel free to be as creative as possible!
If you are interested in sharing your career with John Wetten students, please contact Theresa Schmidt, Volunteer Coordinator, at 503-656-6564 ext. 265 or schmidtt@gladstone.k12.or.us.
Parent Faculty Organization (PFO) News
JWE Parents and Guardians,
Thank you to those who came out and played bingo! We hope you had a fantastic time!!
We will be hosting our next movie night in April! We have decided to break the nights up by grades. Hopefully that will make it easier for movie goers to hear the movie.
- 4/14 - Grades 1-3, 5:45-7:30
- 4/21 - Grades 4-5, 5:45-7:30
Snacks will be available for purchase for the movie. This is a non drop-off event. Parents are expected to please supervise their children. There is no running around in the gym and we ask that kids keep volume levels low so others can hear the movie.
6 volunteers are needed for each movie night. Please email JWE PFO at Jwepfo@gmail.com for more details on volunteering.
