Liberty Park Elementary School Newsletter
Friday, September 18th
Dear Liberty Park Families,
As we wrap up our Bullying Prevention Week, let's remember to practice kindness and understanding every day! Mrs. Tapper, our school counselor, visited every classroom (virtual and in-person) this week to discuss Bullying Prevention with our students. We appreciate your continued conversations with your children about how to speak up against bullying and about the importance of treating each other with kindness and respect.
Next week is College Go Week in Warren Township! At Liberty Park, our students will be able to participate in activities that focus on college awareness and why college is important. On Friday, students can bring $1.00 to wear jeans with their favorite college or LP shirt to school! The flyer below in our newsletter had additional details and information.
Our fall online spirit wear store is open! Check out this website with some new items that are available. This site will be open until October 4th. Items will be delivered to students following our return from Fall Break.

Virtual Information Information
Virtual Newsletter Information - September 18th
COMMUNICATIONS: Please reach out to your teacher(s) when you need support. You should also reach out to your homeschool for support.
NWEA: If you have not taken NWEA with your teacher, please ensure that you are reviewing your email and teacher communication daily. It is important that students are given this opportunity to show what they can do.
CONFERENCES: Conferences will take place after Fall Break. Families will meet with their first quarter teacher to celebrate their efforts in the first quarter. October 22nd is a non-school day for all students in Warren Township due to Parent Teacher Conferences. (October 22nd is NOT an Enrichment Day.)
***ALL FAMILIES should have a conference with their first quarter teacher. This means that some students will be in a new learning environment while having conferences with their first quarter teacher.
- Example: Mrs. Thomas was John's virtual teacher in quarter one. John is now an in-person student being taught by Mr. Henry. Mrs. Thomas needs to meet with John's family for a conference.
- Example: Some students have had three teachers (2 virtual teachers and 1in-person) in the first quarter. The teacher that has the student at the end of the first quarter needs to have the conference.
SUPERINTENDENT'S CANVAS MESSAGE: Starting Monday, September 21full time VIRTUAL K-12 students and ALTERNATING DAY 6-12 students will be required to mark their own attendance in Canvas on days they are not in their school building. Staying active and engaged in each Canvas course is critical for learning and success both short term and long term. Schools and teachers will communicate additional information including sharing tutorials that detail the simple process students will take to mark themselves present for each class period. If you have any questions, please reach out.
Using Canvas for attendance:
****Instead of teachers taking attendance, the following will now occur:
Students (families) will sign into CANVAS and click their class and then hit the attendance verification.
The teacher will log into Synergy and submit the attendance for that day.
The following morning, building secretaries will get an email of students who did not indicate their attendance for the previous day.
The building secretary will go in and mark the student absent for the previous day.
THIS WILL GO LIVE ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2020!
In the long run, we are trying to make the attendance process more streamlined. Once this becomes a routine, it should help simplify the attendance process for everyone.
Other districts that have made this transition noted and they have indicated that this takes about 10 days and then the process is pretty smooth.

GRADES: If conferences and the end of our first quarter are coming, then grades must be right around the corner as well. Yes, this is correct. More information to come soon...
TOWNSHIP SURVEY WINDOW: Over the next two weeks, Warren will have the opportunity to survey 3rd-8th grade students in an effort to receive feedback on their social and academic experience here in Warren Township. The survey window closes on 10.2.2020.

Student Success Handbook
Meet a New Patriot!
~ Ms.Ellie Hersh - Special Education ~
I grew up in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. From a young age I have had two passions: working with children and playing music. I began college at Ithaca College in New York as an oboe performance and music education major before deciding I wanted to be a general education and special education teacher. I transferred to Butler University, majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, and Reading Specialist, while continuing my oboe education. This will be my 5th year teaching. I am so excited to be starting my first year in Warren Township. In my free time I enjoy snuggling with my dog, Reggie, planning my next Disney World trip, and hanging out with my friends and family.
Notes from Nurse Kelly
Upcoming Events: Healthy Smiles Dentist will be coming to Liberty Park next month. They will be here October 28th. More information to follow...

Parent VUE Portal
Synergy has a ParentVUE portal that parents can use to monitor students grades, attendance and discipline. Parents can view their students "Warren Password" on the ParentVUE Student Info tab. Parents can click on Student Info and then scroll to the bottom of the page. They will see their students' passwords right below the bus information.
COVID Screening and Quarantine Information:
MSD Warren's S.A.F.E Reopening Plan provides a comprehensive framework within which students and staff can be safe. Our staff will continue to emphasize social distancing, hand washing/sanitizing, and face coverings with students. Parents are reminded that students exhibiting symptoms should be kept at home, and that the school response to positive cases will be consistent with Warren's Plan. Please don't hesitate to reach out to teachers, counselor, administrators with questions or concerns - We are in this together!
Thank you for taking time each morning to screen your child before coming to school each day. Please continue to do so. Below are symptoms impacting consideration for exclusion from school:
Students and employees should be excluded from school if they test positive for COVID-19 or exhibit two or more of the symptoms of COVID-19 that are not otherwise explained based on ISDH / MCPHD guidance. If in doubt, please don't hesitate to call school at 317-532-1850 for some guidance. We appreciate your support in doing this important screening step each day before sending students to school.

Counselor's Corner
We want your child to be as successful as possible at school. Success in school is not just about reading and math. It is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others. We will be using the Second Step program in your child’s classroom to teach critical skills in these four areas.
1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how
to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task, and be
assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’
feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to
show compassion.
3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when
experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in
a positive way. Your child will be learning a lot this year—and he or she will
need your help!
Throughout the year, your child will be bringing home Home Links that go with several of the Second Step lessons. Home Links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete together. They are a great way for you to understand what your child is learning and for your child to show you what he or she knows. Use your child's grade code to set up an account at secondstep.org.
Home Links Codes:
Kinder: SSPK FAMI LY70
Grade 1: SSP1 FAMI LY71
Grade 2: SSP2 FAMI LY72
Grade 3: SSP3 FAMI LY73
Grade 4: SSP4 FAMI LY74
Grade 5: SSP5 FAMI LY75
Please feel free to reach out if I can be of any assistance or support to your family!

SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLICATIONS/NEWS MEDIA USE
The occasion may arise when the school district wants to recognize your child or your child's school. This may include your child's photo, your child's name or your child's work in district publications, newsletters, on school district websites, and in electronic/social media or in staff training videos. We may also want to tell the media (including newspapers, television, and radio) about your child's achievements. We never knowingly release information about a student to anyone who wants to use it for commercial/political purposes. However, we will honor your request to not include your child in these types of recognitions if you notify your child's school office in writing that you do not want this type of information released.
