MISSION
A Note from your Principal
Dear West Newton families,
October is here and our PTO has wrapped up another successful Book Fair. Thank you for joining us for lunch, attending conferences, and sharing the love of reading with your children! It’s always wonderful to see the joy a new book brings to children! Here are some important items for this month:
· Tues., Oct. 8 = PTO meeting from 6-7pm; planning for our December events
· Oct. 14 – 18 = Fall Break – enjoy this wonderful time with your family!
· Yankee Candle flyers have been sent home and these products make terrific gifts for upcoming holidays. Profits go back in to our classrooms to support student learning! Orders are due by Oct. 28.
Please contact Miss Denee at West Newton if your student is in need of any items such as school supplies or warm clothes for the upcoming winter. Thank you for sharing your child with us each day.
With Tiger Pride,
Principal Strube
Gym News
From the gym…
September was a great month in the gym! We played two weeks of kickball games, then two weeks of floor hockey games, and most students really enjoyed learning new skills and improving familiar skills.
The skills that we worked on in kickball were kicking, fielding, throwing and pitching the ball. In floor hockey, we worked on striking a ball with the hockey stick and ACCURACY to get those goals!
Did you know??? When your student comes to their specials classes, they review their weekly vocabulary word as part of the specials lesson. Usually, I remind them of their word, have someone tell me the definition, and someone else uses it in a sentence pertaining to the gym or a sporting event. (Warning! Cute story with a moral coming up!) In September, one of second grade’s words was DESCRIBE. I thought it would be fun to have them “describe” something in the gym, which they did spectacularly – they are SO observant! It was successful, so I thought it would be fun to let them describe me, too. I found out, among other things, that I have black and white hair, and I’m “kind of” old. (They’re pretty much right!) The moral of the story is… If you don’t want to hear the truth, DON’T ask a second grader! LOL!
Next month, in October, we’ll be focusing on literacy. Each week, I’ll introduce three or four popular or classic children’s books by giving a short summary of the story. Then we’ll play a game based on, or adapted for that story. I’m especially excited about the 5th and 6th grade lessons, because one of the books I’m featuring this year is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and we’re going to play Quidditch. It’ll be SO fun!!! Make sure you check in with your student to find out about some of the other books that are presented. Perhaps you could even read one together!
Finally, if you ever have a concern, please call me (317-856-5237) and I’ll get back with you as soon as possible. Thank you for sharing your children with me! I’m honored and humbled by your trust!

Decatur Township Library Cards
Decatur Township has entered into a partnership with the Indianapolis Public Library. Through this partnership, every year we provide the library with a list of our students, and they match the list with their database of patrons. If a student does not currently have a library card, they will be issued one. This program has been very successful in our schools and in other districts in Indianapolis.
The special card students receive will give them access to all of the library’s digital materials, such as databases of magazine and journal articles, downloadable ebooks, emagazines and audio books. In addition, it will give them very limited access to physical items, such as regular books. Of course, you can change this to a full access card by visiting your library. This is an outstanding opportunity for your student. If for any reason you do not wish for your child to participate, please contact our school office for paperwork to opt out.
Any questions or concerns about the program can be directed to Lynn Hodgkin, Elementary Media Coordinator, at 317-856-2221.
