Holland Elementary School Message
November 15, 2019
Hello HES Families,
This was a BUSY week at Holland Elementary...and it was filled with AWESOME activities! We had our Kindergarten Veterans Day Presentation, Second Grade Tooth Buddy show, Bryan Collier author visit, and the visitation by families during Council Rock Education Week. The children seemed to enjoy each activity, and they continued to demonstrate hard work and respect. So proud of them!
This was also the first week of our Hawkeye Reward system as part of our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports program. Last Friday, the children were introduced to the reward system during our first monthly Hawk Assembly. During the assembly, we recognized specific students with "We Salute You" awards for being awesome children in our school community. Each child received a special t-shirt to wear proudly throughout the school year.
Students will also be recognized through out Hawkeye reward system. Here's how it works:
- Each day, a Hawkeye will be given to ten different students when recognized for meeting expectations for being Safe, Responsible or Kind.
- When students receive a Hawkeye, they will go to the office at a time during the day to redeem their Hawkeye.
- While at the office, they will sign their name in the Celebrity Book and then pick a numbered Hawkeye.
- Numbered Hawkeyes will be placed on the board outside the office in the numbered space that corresponds with the number on the Hawkeye the child has taken.
- When 10 Hawkeyes line up in a row (horizontally or vertically), the ten students whose Hawkeyes are in that row or column will win a prize.
- Each student who receives a Hawkeye will be able to take home their Hawkeye and will have their name announced the following day during morning announcements.
The children appear really excited about the new program, and it will help to teach and reinforce the rules and expectations for our school. Allow with our Hawk assemblies, we're focusing more on recognizing children for making good choices and being safe, responsible, and kind.

Parent-Teacher Conferences and Report Cards
I'd like to pass along some important information regarding Parent-Teacher conferences and report cards:
Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences will take place on Monday, November 25th through Wednesday, November 27th. The late night for conferences will be on Monday evening, and parents should receive a confirmation regarding individual conference times from teachers this week.
In addition, our gym teacher, Mr. Johnson, will be available on Tuesday, November 26th to watch school-aged children while parents attend their child's conference. This will be from 1:00-4:00 on this day only, as the children can play in the gym during this time. This should eliminate the need for a babysitter or it may allow both parents to attend the conference.
Report Cards
Report Cards will be open to view on Friday, November 22nd. After 4:00 pm, parents of students in grades three through six will be able to log onto their account on the Home Access Center (HAC) and view their child’s report card. Viewing your child's report card will provide a great way to prepare for the upcoming conference with your child's teacher.
Best of Luck to Students in the Girls on the Run Program in their 5K Run on Saturday!

Children can start thinking about what their entry could be! It could be an experiment, a demonstration, a scientific collection, or information on a scientific topic. Students can work individually or in a small group.
During parent-teacher conferences, parents can pick up a tri-fold and packet in the office.
Winter Choral and Instrumental Concert
Our Winter Choral and Instrumental Concert will be on Wednesday, December 11th. The evening performance for families will be at 7:00 pm. The children have been working so hard during rehearsals and it's going to be a fantastic performance.
Cold and Flu Season
It is that time of year to start talking with your family about how to protect yourselves from colds and the flu. One reminder is to make sure that students come to school properly dressed. When the weather is appropriate, children will be going outside for recess, and it is highly recommended that students bring a coat, hat, and gloves when the days get colder.
Tips for Keeping Your Family Healthy
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend getting a flu shot for all family members. This is the best way to prevent getting the flu.
- Talk to your child about good hand-washing and practice washing for at least 20 seconds.
- Teach your child to cough or sneeze into the bend of their arm. If they use a tissue teach them to dispose of them in a trash can.
- Teach your child to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth.
- Teach them to avoid sharing drinks, water bottles, and silverware.
- Do not send your child to school with a fever. It is important for them to stay home from school, rest and drink plenty of fluids.
Teacher Appreciation Luncheon
Monday, November 25th is the HES Annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. If you’d like to make a dish or dessert of your family’s favorite recipe to share with the staff at HES, you can drop it off in the office on November 25th between 9am-12pm.
The PTO is also looking for volunteers to help set up, serve, and clean up. A Sign-Up Genius will be sent out soon for volunteers. Email Stacey Farhat at staceerase@aol.com with the name of the dish you’ll be making. Thank you.
Holland Elementary Geography Bee
This year Holland’s fifth and sixth graders will participate in a school Geography Bee. The top ten scorers on a paper and pencil test, given on Wednesday, November 20th, will compete LIVE at Holland on Monday, December 16th. The winner of Holland’s Live Geography Bee will go on to take the National Geographic State Qualifying Test in January. The National Geographic Bee is an annual competition designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world.
