Read Romans 1-10
Paul, a Pharisee whose life was changed dramatically by a personal encounter with the resurrected Savior (Acts 9), was a Jewish Roman citizen. Paul went on several missionary journeys to modern-day Turkey, Greece, Israel, and Italy to share the Good News about Jesus. Paul’s letters to the churches in these areas make up much of the New Testament. This
lesson is an overview of Paul’s letter to the church in Rome. Roman roads were well known for their high quality, durability, and success in connecting the Roman Empire. Some Roman roads still exist today throughout Europe. Fittingly, Paul’s explanation of the Gospel in the
book of Romans is called the Roman Road, as he maps out our need for Jesus to connect us to God.
Paul begins with God’s revelation through nature, His perfection, and the problem of sin and its consequences. Romans 1:25a poignantly states, “They traded the truth about God for a lie”. Our sin destroys our right relationship with God. Those who have sinned deserve the
punishment for sin: death and eternal separation from God. As Paul states in Romans 2:13, “For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight.” But who among us can stand blameless in regard to God’s
Law? According to Romans 3:23, no one can. We have all sinned. No one is right with God. We all fall short, but we are not without hope. Paul explains how a sinful people can become right with God: not by deeds, but by faith in Jesus Christ. As Abraham’s faith was accredited
to him as righteousness, so our faith in Christ will be accredited to us as righteousness. As Romans 4:25 says, “He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.” Jesus took our punishment on Himself, so that we could become
right with God. He did this not because we earned His forgiveness, but because of His great love for us (Romans 5:8).
Jesus makes us right with God. This simple Truth is Good News! As you read Romans 8, you can almost hear the joy and excitement in Paul’s voice as he tells his countrymen that we can have victory in Christ! Romans 8:37 says, “No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory
is ours through Christ, who loved us.” As you prepare to teach, take time to meditate on the passages below.
Confess your sins to Him and thank Him for making a way for you to be with Him eternally.
• Romans 3:21-28
• Romans 5:1-8
• Romans 7:22-8:4
• Romans 8:26-39
When you Pray
Prayer is a gift – an invitation to talk to God. But it can also be a challenge. Do you have trouble thinking of words to say, fear some emotions are too intense to express to God, or reach the end of a day only to realize you haven’t prayed at all? You’re not alone. Thankfully, in God’s Word we encounter many voices who teach us how to pray. In this 7-session study, beloved Bible teachers Kelly Minter, Jackie Hill Perry, Jen Wilkin, Jennifer Rothschild, Jada Edwards and Kristi McLelland will help you study prayers in the Bible that can inspire your own. You’ll find that when you pray, your faith is strengthened and your heart is united to Jesus.
