Spotlight on School Libraries: Some Facts
1) "Students are more likely to succeed when they have library programs that are well staffed, well funded, technologically well equipped, well stocked, and more accessible."
2) "...the neediest learners may benefit the most from trained librarians and quality library programs."
3) "Student achievement suffers when schools lack libraries that are staffed by full-time librarians."

January Library Programming - Book Awards Month
Every January, selected librarians across the country meet to select the winners of the Caldecott Award and the Newbery Award, two of the most important awards given in the world of children's literature. The Caldecott is given to the illustrator of the "most distinguished American picture book for children". The Newbery is given to the author of "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." This year's awards will be announced on Monday, February 2.
Students K-3 were to read 12 Caldecott winning titles in the month of January. Those who succeeded were crowned "Caldecott Kids". Students 3-5 were to read 2 Newbery titles. Those who succeeded received a "Reading Ribbon". Students were also featured on the Roby Morning News Show.
Student pictures can be viewed on the Roby Library Twitter (http://www.twitter.com) @robyeslibrary. You can also find pictures of students on the Roby Library webpage found at http://robyeslibrary.weebly.com. (Click on my name above and you will be linked to the webpage directly).
Scheduled Classes
Kindergarten classes spent time learning about and listening to award-winning Caldecott titles. They spent time talking about why a book wins a Caldecott (the illustrator wins because of the images).
Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are seen on a weekly basis for book exchange.
During the month of January students in grades K-5 worked on Jump rope skills. We will continue to work on different tricks and movements in the month of February. The month of February is Heart Healthy Month and Jump Rope for Heart is scheduled for Feb.19, during special area time. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this event, it is our fundraiser for the American Heart Association (we will kick it off at the beginning of February). More information will be going home about this event. There are different levels of prizes that kids can earn, and all of it goes to a good cause! Below is a link that you can go to in order to make an online donation. There are special incentives for students that earn/donate online!

Please remember to check the lost and found! Several students have left/lost things in P.E. class!
It is very important that all students wear tennis shoes to school every day! If your child in unable to participate in P.E. for a particular reason, please be sure to send a note with them! P.E. grades are based on participation, sportsmanship, and behavior in class. There will also be written assignments that the students will be graded on throughout the year. Students are not graded on their “athletic ability” but they are graded on their willingness to try all activities!
Kindergarten and First grade are continuing to develop their singing voices through songs and games.
Second and Third grade are busy preparing for their musical "Arf!" and Fourth and Fifth grade are working hard preparing for their musical "Joust!" Don't forget to send in costume donations. Donations are GREATLY appreciated!
Choir and Orff PAC Members: Turn in your permission slips for the All County Music Festival.

Art Club is up and running! Students had their first meeting on Jan. 12th and have already made a lot of progress! This week we will start constructing and painting our castle, which will be used for the set of the 4th and 5th grade spring musical “Joust.” We are so excited to see how it turns out!
All grades have been having fun making masks from a variety of materials. 4th and 5th grade made 3D paper masks that were decorated with cut pieces of paper and textiles. 3rd grade got some great results using paper bags and construction paper. K-2nd grade used paper and symmetrical decorations. Students also studied the variety of reasons why different cultures create and use masks.
Next month we will be exploring printmaking and sculpture!!
In Topsy Turvy this month, we talked about Courage. The lesson focused on facing fears, trying new things, and standing up for what is right. What can your family do to show courage?
