THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - October 25, 2019
The Principal's Corner
Dear Families
Autumn is here and Halloween is fast approaching! We are looking forward to a safe and healthy day with our students on Thursday, October 31. We aim to ensure that ALL students, staff members and visitors feel safe and comfortable throughout the day. To accomplish this objective, we request your assistance and cooperation with some important details:
Costumes cannot interfere with learning--cumbersome outfits or outrageous distractions make learning impossible..
No costume should be worn that might scare the K-2 kids.
No masks or face paint should be worn that prevents the staff from seeing student faces.
No props. In the past, students have brought in items that violate school rules. At the very least, they are another thing to keep track of and a distraction.
No gore. We are a K-8 school, and we need to be sensitive to all students.
No clowns of any kind- - it is really upsetting to some people.
Finally, please follow the school dress code found online in the school handbook.
Thanks again for helping make this day a fun experience for all involved. Happy Halloween!
Warmly,
Suzan & John

The culmination of our building exploratory. Students made simple push/gravity go-karts. Each required use of a saw, bit and brace, electric drill, screwdriver and socket set. Some had so much fun they brought it home!
Cross Country Team Season Update
The boys and girls cross country running teams had very successful season this year. Every single runner improved their mile run time from the beginning of the year to the end, some by over a minute! Runners became more comfortable with longer distances as the season progressed and their race times improved because of it. Nate Haviland, an 8th grade student led the boys team all season, consistently placing in the top 15 at races. Maeve Parker-Clark, a 7th grade student led the girls all season, consistently placing in the top 10 each race, with a 5th place finish at the Chittenden County Championships.

Girls "A" Team Soccer Season Update
We had a very successful season with a 6 -1 4 record. The girls were very team oriented and represented HCS very well. The 8th graders were Alex Loner, Merrill Jacobs, Natalie Webster, Ruby Opton, Addison Mauer, Maeve O'Neil, Annalise Daggett, and Desi Roth-Longe. The 7th graders were Mia Stolz, Rieanna Murray, Anna Garvey, Kate Roberts, Odile Elliot, and Ezra Dziurzynski.
Girls "B" Team Soccer Season Recap
The HCS girls' B Team had a wonderful season. Everyone worked hard and gave 100%. All of the players got along well and supported each other during practices and games.
The members of the B Team were:
Ruby Sausville, Emma Kuhn, Amelia LaMothe, Makayla Johnson, Aliya Densmore, Addie Baker, Ella Silvia, Ava Rolland, Brooke Loftus, Sophie Frost, Rachel Baldwin, Elizabeth Bullock, Elle Gardner, Allyson Guttierez, Jessi Jarvis, Harper Kring, Molly Marino, Ruby Mott, Eliza Querios and Caitlyn Reed.
Boy's "A" Team Soccer Season Update
The boys soccer A Team finished the season with a winning record of 5-4-1. It was my first year coaching at HCS and often times teams don't accept a new coach, in my opinion, this was not the case with this team. They were respectful and made my job easy by working as a team both on and off the soccer field. Most games we were the smaller team, but we played bigger and better because the boys played with tremendous heart and gave 100% effort. Their energy and desire to win never ceased until the whistle blew at the end of the game. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to coach them and am proud of the passion they had for the game.
All the 8th graders were great role models and leaders this season:
Henry Frost: Henry was the team captain. From day one, the players told me that Henry should be captain and I now know why. Henry led the team in all warm ups and gave them encouragement in every practice and game. Henry was one of our center middies who played every minute of every game because I needed his talent, energy, leadership and ability to control the middle of the field. Henry's leadership and talent will be missed on the team next year.
Chandler Turner: Chandler probably loves soccer more than any other person I know. Chandler was one of the first players to show up to practice and one of the last to leave. His desire to perform well and win every game showed in the effort he put into every second of each game. Chandler was one of our center backs and most strikers couldn't get by him and Chandler helped save a ton of goals. Chandler has amazing speed and control of the ball. He is also the type of player who can take the ball from the back of the field and dribble through everyone to get into shooting range. Chandler also would give pep talks during half time which showed his deep knowledge of and passion for soccer.
Danny Goldsmith: Danny is a player who can play anywhere on the field and I counted on that. I was confident that Danny would play hard and do well in whatever position I asked him to play. Danny never stopped running on the field. He went after every ball that was near him and didn't back down. His energy is never ending and his talent is great.
Luke Broussard: Luke was another leader on our team. He controlled the center midfield with Henry. Luke was everywhere and harrassed anyone who got near him. Luke is an amazing defender and an equally amazing offensive threat. In one game, Luke scored a hat trick. Luke played with passion and worked hard from the moment he stepped on the field.
Rhett Gardner: Rhett was one of our goalies. Rhett improved his skills with every game. Rhett made some amazing saves, never backed down and worked hard to help lead us to our winning season.
The 8th graders who decide to continue playing in high school, will be very successful and they all will be missed.
I would like to also say thank you to the rest of the team, next year they should be super competitive and successful. I thank HCS for letting me coach these amazing kids.
Coach Bridget
Boys "B" Team Soccer Season Update
Although we ended the year with a record of 1-9 it gave me a chance to see what each and every player was made of as a person. Each and every player showed great perseverance and passion for the game and their craft as they showed up to every practice and game, eager to learn, compete and have fun. The players dedication really paid off as the team improved as a whole week by week. The difference between game 1 and game 10 for the squad was night and day as every player individually got better as the season progressed. It was a fun season as a whole and can’t wait to see everyone out there next year!
Tonight! Halloween Dance for Grades 6-8
There will be a Halloween Dance for Hinesburg Community School students in grades 6 through 8 on Friday, October 25th from 6:15 to 9:15 p.m. in the H.C.S. gym. Refreshments will be for sale in the lobby and the admission price is $8.00. Students who wear a costume to the dance will receive $1 off admission. Costumes must be school appropriate (age appropriate, PG, no props, or no full face masks). Students will need to be able to see and move comfortably. All proceeds will be used to help fund Student Council projects and the 8th grade end-of-year trip. We value participation, so if you are a family in need of financial assistance for the dance, please contact Mr. Pontius.
Students are asked to arrive no earlier than 6:15 p.m and must have their money and signed permission slip in hand to gain entrance. Students may arrive later than 6:15, and they may leave the dance early if an adult meets them at the door. Otherwise, please plan to pick up your child inside at 9:15 p.m. (The chaperones will greatly appreciate an on-time pick-up).
An Important Note Regarding Connect 5
We use the Connect 5 system to inform HCS families of important and time sensitive information. It has come to our attention that often times families and staff will see a call coming in from the school number and rather than listen to the message they call to ask what the message is about. This inadvertently ties up the line for families who need to call us because of the content of the message. We often receive over 50 calls within just a few minutes from parents who saw that the school called but did not listen to the message.
We ask that you make sure your mailbox can accept messages and that you listen to the message to see if it impacts you before you call school. This will allow the school line to be available to those families who truly need to contact us. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.
Child Find Notice from Champlain Valley School District
Champlain Valley School District is required by federal law to locate, identify and evaluate all children with disabilities. The process of locating, identifying and evaluating children with disabilities is known as child find.
Champlain Valley School District schools conduct Kindergarten screening each spring, but parents may call to make an appointment to discuss their concerns at any time. As the school district of residence, CVSD has the responsibility to identify and provide services to any child with special needs who may require special education and related services in order to access and benefit from public education.
If you have, or know of any CVSD resident who has a child with a disability under the age of 21 or a child who attends a private school located in Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George or Williston, Vermont, we would like to hear from you. Sometimes parents are unaware that special education services are available to their children.
