Daylight Savings: Turn Your Clocks Ahead on March 10

Before you go to bed on March 9, or right when you wake up on March 10, don't forget to set your clocks one hour ahead for daylight savings!

Hawthorne Fun Fair: Volunteers Needed!

The PTA Fun Fair will be March 15th and we need lots of volunteers to make this event a success! Please sign up to volunteer here. Middle and high school volunteers are welcome! We love seeing our former students helping out back at Hawthorne!

Spring Picture Day is Monday, March 18th!

Information on picture ordering will be sent home soon, but please mark your calendars for spring pictures on March 18th! Pictures will be taken during the regular school day and there will not be a picture re-take day. Ordering pictures is optional and this is a service provided to parents; you do not have to order photos.

A message from our Reading Department

At Hawthorne, we value a school culture where students and staff are immersed in books. Students getting excited about reading and wanting to read is our goal. Read Across America is a national event incorporating the love of reading with Dr. Seuss’ birthday! Hawthorne School had a week of special activities connected to a Dr. Seuss book each day, culminating with an all school read in the gym.


We also decorated the hallways with favorite books from students and staff. Next time you visit school, walk the hallways and see all of the favorites we love.


Here are a few other ways our Hawthorne staff motivates kids to read:

  • give book talks to entice students to try new genres or topics.

  • show students that we are readers ourselves by sharing the books that we have read

  • give students opportunities to talk about books they read with each other.

  • find new books, series and authors to share and recommend to student

Important News from the Health Office for 5th Grade Parents

Your 5th grade student will bring home an envelope with important health information. The envelope will include a letter with information regarding the health requirements for 6th grade, a physical examination form and a dental exam form.


The school nurse needs your 5th grade student’s health records, so that your child can begin 6th grade. Please return completed exams to the HAWTHORNE Elementary School health office before Memorial Day, or to the middle school after this date. The physical and immunization requirements MUST be completed and turned in by the first day of school, August 22, 2019. Please make your appointment now.


If you have any questions regarding the health requirements, please feel to contact the Health Office.

Dental Clinic

The Du Page County Health Department Dental Health Unit will be at Hawthorne School on Tuesday, March 19. Participation in the program is optional. The State of Illinois requires that all children enrolled in Kindergarten, Second and Sixth Grades have an oral health (dental) examination performed by a licensed dentist. This dental clinic screening/examination will fulfill the requirement for those students who have not already submitted proof of dental examination. If you would like your child to participate, please return the permission form to the Health Office. The Dental Unit staff will only see students with a completed, signed form. If you have any questions, contact the Hawthorne Health Office at 630-682-2065.

Plunge Into Fitness Challenge

Stay healthy and fit this winter by being active and keep moving! Each student should have received information on the Plunge Into Fitness Challenge, where students are challenged to participate in 30 minutes of exercise daily for the next 50 days! Any activity that increases heart rate will count, such as walking, biking, running, jumping rope or playing a sport. Keep track of your exercise on your fitness log, and be sure to turn in your log by April 8th. All students who turn in their log will receive their choice of a free ticket or discount to Raging Waves Water Park!

Hawthorne’s 5t​h Annual BOB Tournament is Coming

If your child is interested in the upcoming Battle of the Books tournament:

● Sign up in the library by March 15th

● Teammate requests allowed (up to 8 kids per team) but not guaranteed

● Final team assignments posted by March 20th

● Open to 3r​d​, 4t​h​, and 5t​h​ grades

● All kids on a team must be from same grade

● You do ​not​ have to read all the books; everyone competes as a team

● Each team is responsible for preparing for the meets. Teams are encourage

to meet during recess or outside of school. We will distribute some study

material.

Books list (12 books) will be distributed when the Wheaton Public Library releases the list for the 2020 Battle of the Books competition soon.

Championship Battle: Friday, May 31 at ​2:00-3:00 PM in gym (Grade-level winners plus the highest score received that did not win grade level)


Families are welcome to attend the meets.

PTA Announces 2019-2020 Executive Committee

Congrats to the nominations for next year's PTA Executive Committee. The new committee will be voted in at the April 2nd General Meeting of the PTA with their term to begin on July 1.
