Southside Announcements
And Event Calendar for the Week of August 7th
A Note from Mrs. Burkhardt
Dear Southside Family,
On behalf of Southside Elementary, I am happy to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year! We are looking forward to partnering with you to ensure our students can achieve their highest potential. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and work everyday to grow our Southside students as leaders and good citizens. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:
1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience.
2) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills.
3) Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life.
The Southside staff and I feel privileged to be a part of this school family. We thank you for your support and we look forward to meeting you.

A Note for Car Riders
Welcome Back, Tigers!
Thank you for taking a minute to read the information below to help make our car rider line and parking lot efficient and safe for all families. Thank you!
CAR RIDER NUMBER IS REQUIRED
If you are picking up in the car rider line in the afternoon, to ensure the safety of your child, you MUST have your Orange Car Rider Number placed in the windshield of your car. If you do not have a school issued Orange Car Rider Number, we can issue you one. Beginning at 2:00 the first day of school, we will have a table on the sidewalk outside of the front door for those needing a number. Please park, bring your ID to the table, and we will issue you an Orange Car Rider Number for the year. If you have a number from last year, you may use that number again this year. Please park and come into the office for an Orange Car Rider Number after the first day.
TRAFFIC PATTERN AT PICK UP
Please remember that the car loop line extends ONLY in the direction of 7th street. Any cars parked on the shoulder toward Kentucky Street will be added to the end of the line. Please show patience towards new parents learning our car rider system.
WALKERS
Thank you for using the car rider pick-up procedure. We cannot efficiently accommodate parents/guardians who park and come in to pick up their student at dismissal. Students who are walking out with parents will be dismissed AFTER all car riders are loaded. If you have an appointment or special circumstance, it is helpful if you send a note with your student or call the office in the morning so that we can have your student ready in the office for you.
7:40AM START TIME
A reminder that school begins at 7:40. Your child must be in the building by 7:40 to be on time. Any time after 7:40 is considered a tardy. If you arrive after 7:40, you must park and sign your student in with office staff. We cannot make adjustments to the 7:40 time due to the train, so please plan accordingly. Your student must still be marked tardy if there is a train in the morning.
PARKING
Parking on the drop off circle, at anytime of day, is not permitted due to fire safety. Please pull forward and use the parking spaces or park in the parking lot when visiting or signing in a student.
Please reserve the handicapped parking spaces close to the crosswalk for our families and students who need them for accessibility. There are several spaces marked VISITOR near the front of the lot that are available for short visits or student sign-in.
Thank you for being alert and aware in our parking area.
There are many small children moving about.
We appreciate your help in keeping your child and others safe.
A Piece of Information from our Southside Handbook
Communication
Southside is using Tuesday folders this year to communicate with families. Feedback on student work, flyers for events, field trip permission slips, and other school communication will come home on Tuesday each week. Please look for this information and review it with your student and return the Tuesday Folder to school every Wednesday.
Daily homework folders will also be used for daily communication.
