Reflections from 10-24-16
We completed our tenth week of school last week and so far this school year has gone well. Students who were major discipline issues last year have matured, improved academically, and have been productive. I visited with several of these students and solicited feedback on what/who made them change. Repeatedly, the students responded, “I am not sure what happened last year, but I started on the wrong track. I knew I could do better, so I did. I wanted to do better this year. My teachers really helped me. I want to graduate with my class.” Of course, I commended these students on their performance and encouraged them to continue on their path to success.
After our visit, I thought about the students who had not turned it around, and how we could connect with these students. Research supports students who see themselves as an important part of the school community, do better in school. Think about the students who are disconnected and integrate strategies to encourage their involvement. Shine your light so brightly that ALL students feel that they are an integral part of the AMCHS community.
