SME newsletter for families and the community
Dear Parents,
As you know, the School District of Pickens County (SDPC) and Six Mile Elementary are committed to improving our schools by listening to and responding to your suggestions. As part of the district’s continuous improvement efforts, our district is participating in the accreditation process with the accrediting body COGNIA to learn more about the quality of our schools and programs.
Help us understand how well we are meeting the needs of your child by participating in a brief family engagement survey!
Your feedback will help us identify areas of strength and opportunities to elevate the quality of our schools. This anonymous survey will only take a few minutes to complete.
The survey will be open through September 18th, 2023.
YAMS for 3rd-5th graders
Please make every effort to join us for the IMPORTANT PARENT MEETING on Tuesday, September 12th at 6PM. During this meeting, we will discuss how the program works, fill out the required paperwork for students to participate, assign rental instruments, and receive payments for lessons, t-shirts, and rentals.
***If your child has an instrument that he/she plans to use for the program, please bring it to the meeting to be approved for use.
THINGS TO REMEMBER:

MAKE SURE ALL PAPERWORK IS COMPLETE
BRING INSTRUMENTS TO BE APPROVED
BRING PAYMENTS if possible
Best of the Nest
Each month at Six Mile Elementary, we focus on different character traits and talk about ways to show those traits to others. We discuss the trait in morning meeting in our classrooms. We spotlight the trait on the school news show. Mrs. Orr, our guidance counselor, goes into classrooms and does special lessons with the trait. At the end of each month, we have a Best of the Nest party to honor those students who "shine" in that area.
In August, our character trait was Creativity. In September, our character trait is Friendship. Friendship is using our words or actions to show others we care. We will have our Best of the Nest party on the first Friday of the following month and students attending will be featured on our social media pages.
Nut Safe School
Just a reminder that Six Mile Elementary is a Nut Safe School. This means that all foods that are brought into the school, including party food or snacks for the class, must be nut free. If you purchase cupcakes to send in for birthdays, please make sure it has the ingredient label on the side. Here is a great website to visit when choosing food to send into the classroom: https://www.weareteachers.com/nut-free-snacks/
Absence Notes
If your student is absent, you have three days to send a note stating the reason for their absence before it is counted unexcused. You can send a handwritten note or you can email Stephanie Merck at stephaniemerck@pickens.k12.sc.us. You can also email your child's teacher.
When students have accumulated 3 absences in a row without a note, Mrs. Plyler will have to schedule a meeting for an Attendance Conference. Please make sure to get your note in so that this does not happen.
Helpful Reminder
It is always a good idea to send a change of clothes in your student's backpack. Catastrophes, like milk spills, mud puddles, art accidents, and more can happen in a split second at school. If your child has a change of clothes, then it alleviates a call to you to bring clothes to school. Plan ahead - send a change of clothes!
