COVID-19 PARENT UPDATE 3.31.20
Culture.Relationships.Future Ready
Dear Parents,
I hope this message finds you all healthy and safe. COVID-19 is ever changing and requires those of us in education to be flexible and respond to this crisis in ways never thought possible. I just want you all to know that your children and our entire school community are constantly in my thoughts.
The last two days have been busy for us at SIS/SMS. I created a video for staff outlining our expectations school wide. Then this morning, I met with each grade level team to outline our systems of communicating with students and parents moving forward. Grade level teams have already begun work on supplemental activities for their students. If the direction from the Oregon Department of Education changes, we will notify you as soon as possible.
Over the next few days, each of you should be receiving personal contact from one of your student’s teachers. Our fourth and fifth grades are self-contained and those individual teachers will be reaching out to students and families. Our sixth grade classrooms are very large. We will be supporting teachers with help in contacting families. Our seventh and eighth grade teachers have been assigned students based on their advisory groups. That doesn’t mean that students won’t have access to content area teachers. It is just a way for students to connect with their advisory teacher and have that adult as an advocate for them. If at any time, students don’t feel as though they are having any luck with contacting a content specific teacher, they will always have their advisory teacher there to support them.
You should also be receiving information in the coming days on how to access and check out a chromebook for educational purposes if needed. The district office is finalizing those plans and will have a system in place shortly. The goal is to do this next week. Meal services are continuing. The times and locations have not changed. Please, I encourage you to take advantage of that service being provided to our students.
Again, I will do everything within my power to keep you informed. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions. I miss your kids terribly. There were times today when I saw teachers faces that moved me. The educators that your students are surrounded by are compassionate and care deeply for your kids. I miss greeting the kids in the mornings. I miss normal, but know this is necessary in order for us to get back to where we need to be in order to continue to provide your sons and daughters the best education possible.
Take care and be safe,
Mr. Proctor
