From the desk of our Proud Principal

Dear Bunker Hill Families,

Our kids ROCKed the ISTEP+ and IREAD! I am so proud of how hard they worked! I also want to thank our amazing parents that were able to come in and volunteer during the testing windows. Also, I would like to recognize and thank our awesome staff members. They have done an outstanding job of preparing our students for the assessments! We were able to create the best possible assessment environment due to your help!

We were able to be the first school to 3-Peat as “Chow with the Cow” Champions! Thank you for your support! A portion of the proceeds will come back to Bunker Hill! Next year’s “Chow with the Cow” theme – “Chow More for Four - The Bunker Hill Dynasty!” J May 6th is the Ella’s Sweet Swirl Challenge. Like “Chow with the Cow," we will be competing against our FTCSC elementary schools. Lastly, May 14th is the FAST FLASH 5k/2k Walk/Run. This will be our final FTCSC elementary school participation competition of the year. Come out and support Bunker Hill!

May is a busy month at “The Hill.” May 5th – 9th will be the End of the Year DIBELS assessment for our kids. We will also hold two $1 hat days to help support our community. May 11th will be the YMCA hat day. The proceeds will go to help support the YMCA before and after school program. May 17th will be Hats off to Acton. The proceeds will go to help support the opening of Acton. May 19th will be our annual 1st grade Mini 500. May 25th will be 5th grade promotion and our last day of school.

Have a safe and awesome May! Follow us on Facebook (Bunker Hill Elementary School), Twitter (@BH_Bulldogs), and/or by the hashtag #BHBulldogs – GO BULLDOGS!

The school year is rapidly coming to a close, but we are not quite done yet! We are in the home stretch and it is a great time to remind our students about finishing Bulldog Strong! These last few weeks are jam-packed with fun, interactive and engaging learning. It is so important for students to maintain good attendance during this time so that they can be a part of all of the exciting instruction taking place at The Hill.

This is also a time of transitions. Students will be changing grade levels and teachers and some students may even be moving on to middle school or changing schools due to a move. No matter what the change, we want to make it as smooth as possible. Here are some tips on easing any transition anxieties:

- Orient students: If your child will be going to a new school, schedule a tour. Our 5th grade students go visit the middle school so they can feel better prepared for their big move.

- Make a list: If your student is feeling anxious about moving up, create a two column list with your child. One side can be "pros" and the other side can be "cons." This will create a great conversation starter to work through some of the worry!

- Begin preparations early: Help your child phase in adjustments ahead of time. For example, towards the end of summer vacation, start setting bedtime routines earlier to help your student phase back into the school routine.

- Inform the School: Consider any situations or special circumstances that might make it more difficult for your child to transition. Don't forget, we are all here to help our students be happy and successful!

Student of the Month

This year we've decided to update our Student of the Month Awards. We wanted to tie in our monthly core essentials curriculum with our student of the month program. We will be spotlighting one student per classroom that has displayed the core essentials trait. For April the trait we’ve discussed is Friendship. Classrooms read a Dr. Seuss book that portrays the month’s trait and then teachers chose one student from their class that demonstrated that trait. Below is a list of the monthly traits along with a link to a reading of the Dr. Seuss book that correlates.

September: Initiative Horton Hatches The Egg

October: Individuality Happy Birthday to You

November: Service Thidwick The Kindhearted Moose

December: Compassion How the Grinch Stole Christmas

January: Self Control My Many Colored Days

February: Cooperation The Cat in the Hat

March: Hope The Lorax

April: Friendship Horton Hears a Who

May: Contentment Yertle The Turtle

Student of the Month lists are available on our website.

Front Office Information

Please review a few important front office policies.

  • Morning student drop off must be done in the car rider line. Drop off opens at 8:35 am in the car rider line.
  • Students arriving after 8:50 am must be signed in at the front office.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm. Teachers need time to make arrangements.
  • Attendance- Please review the Franklin Township policies and procedures for absences on p. 2-3 in the student handbook. We appreciate your cooperation.
  • All visitors must have a photo ID to enter the building.

Car Rider Reminder

Car Rider Participants:

Safety is our main focus in our car rider line. Please remember to have your child exit/enter the driver's side of your vehicle during drop off/pick up. If you have to use the passenger's side, a staff member must accompany your child to the sidewalk. A student cannot exit the passenger side of a vehicle without staff assistance.

We appreciate your patience when dropping off and picking up your child. This ensures the safety of all our students and staff.

Please share this safety information with anyone that may pick up or drop off your student.

LOST and FOUND

Don't forget to check our LOST and FOUND for any lost items. It is located at the top of the stairs on the way to the cafeteria. Any items left at the end of the school year will be donated.

Newsletter

Each month we will send out a newsletter with important information, dates, and reminders. This newsletter will be sent electronically to the email we have on file for each student. If you requested a paper copy, the newsletter will come home with your student. The newsletter will also be available on our website http://www.ftcsc.k12.in.us/bunker-hill or our Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bunker-Hill-Elementary-School/172442352820782

REMIND

Remind is another great way to stay connected to Bunker Hill. You just text the number 81010 and enter message @bhbulldogs and press send. We will send out messages/reminders and you will simply receive then as a text message. We have no access to cell phone numbers nor does anyone else in this group. You can not reply to the message as no one will receive them.

Friendly Reminders

  • We do our best to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum. If your child forgets an item and you bring it in, please do not be offended if the front office asks for you to leave the item with them so it can be delivered at an appropriate time.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm.
  • If electronics (cell phones, ipods, gaming systems) are brought into school and removed from backpacks, they will be confiscated by the teacher. A parent/guardian will be asked to pick up the electronic at the front desk.
  • When having lunch with your student in the cafeteria please remember to only have your child sit with you at the family table. We like to keep the table open for other families. Please No Fast Food!
  • When visiting your child for lunch, please go directly to the cafeteria and exit the building when lunch is finished. We are no longer allowing parents to go to recess with the class. We appreciate your cooperation in helping limit our classroom distractions.

Clinic Reminders

Immunization Information

Parents of current 5th grade students:

Immunizations of meningitis and Tdap are needed for the start of 6th grade. Please call the doctor now to schedule an appointment prior to the start of school so that your student will have the shots that Indiana requires for middle school. When you have an appointment date and time, please let the elementary school nurse know so that it can be recorded. Requirements are grade level-based, and not dependent on age of students entering 6th grade. Call now for the best availability of appointments.
