Technology in the Classroom
Nadja Meyer; 2nd period
Advantages and Disadvantages
Distraction
A negative aspect of it is that “unfortunately sometimes technology in the classroom means students have one more thing to distract them.”(Eitel) If they get bored they can listen to music, go to YouTube and watch videos or just share with anyone on Facebook or Twitter or any other social network, how boring class is again today. Also though having your phone with you in class means you now have not just the people next to you can talk to, because you can also text your best friends and talk to them as well. Technology brings a lot of different and new ways that can easily distract students instead of listening
Better sources
Another negative aspect of technology in the classroom is that “students rely heavily on sources with questionable academic quality, such as Wikipedia, and value immediacy over quality.” (De Nisen) Students don’t know which sources they can trust so they just take the popular ones they know, so especially Wikipedia. But most of them don’t know that there can be mistakes and wrong information in Wikipedia, since the users write the articles. But a lot of people have noticed that problem and it “has led to the creation of a number of rubrics often from high schools and colleges, designed to help students select quality online sources.”(De Nisen) And so it has turned into a advantage, because now there’re trustful sources available for them and the also learn how to use technology correctly what is not just important for their schooltime but also an important lesson to learn for their future carrer.
More Fun and easier
A second positive aspect for technology is that the “Application of media in teaching will be to diversify the skills of intelligence, which is absolutely necessary to acquire a skill.”(Anzaruddin) It makes learning more enjoyable, easy and sharper. It also is “able to overcome the problem of students with different learning styles”(Anzaruddin) Everyone likes to learn differently and you know how you can remember things most easily. Media gives you a lot of different learning methods, for example vocabulary sides like conjuguemos for foreign languages and so on. Everybody can see how they like to learn best. What makes their learning more fun and successful.
