Go Skyhawks!
Ponderings from Mr. Nieslanik
There is a lot happening at SRHS these days! Not only did our swimming and wrestling seasons just end with two of our wrestlers placing at state (Seniors Jacob McRae & Devon Martin), but our girls and boys basketball teams are still going strong. The girls enter the state playoffs ranked number one in state, and the boys enter ranked number three. In addition, our Color Guard and Winter Percussion groups are placing well at their competitions with the season ending later in March. Our theatre department is preparing for opening night of Big Fish on March 8. Big Fish will run on March 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17. I highly encourage you to attend and support our students. If this is not enough, spring sports began on February 26th with softball, baseball, track, tennis, and golf preparing for their first matches.
The work happening during Early Release Wednesdays has been focused, intentional, and in direct support of student learning. On the first Wednesday of every month, we meet as a whole staff and have whole staff professional development on a specific topic. We have been reading as a staff Eric Jensen's work "Teaching with Poverty in Mind" and using this as a launch into discussions and learning, focusing on engagement strategies, instructional practices and learning supports. Departments also have time on first Wednesdays to align our school-wide work with department conversations. On the second and fourth Wednesdays, staff work in their Individual Learning Teams. The work varies by team, but it is all focused on teaching and learning strategies. The third Wednesday is reserved for building and district-wide PD. Teachers can choose to attend district-wide PD around a focused issue or subject, or attend SRHS specific PD. Our Week Three offerings have been varied, but two constant themes include equity and inclusion, as well as the use of technology in the classroom.
It's a great time to be a Skyhawk!

Support Staff Appreciation Week, Mar. 5-9
Classified staff pay the bills and keep an eye on the budget. They order books and supplies, manage student records, run reports, track student attendance, and maintain our technology. They feed us, keep our building clean and in good repair, and sort the mail.
Classified staff greet visitors, take care of sick and injured students, answer the phones, and make copies, deliveries, and coffee. They oversee the athletic programs. They are coaches, advisors, homework assistants, and friendly, caring faces. They help students figure out their futures, and keep a protective, vigilant watch over our safety.
It is our belief that all SRHS staff are one family, one team. Each member does their work to support students and Southridge. So, it has always been our history and tradition to celebrate the whole staff in May during Staff Appreciation Week.
However, the vital and amazing work classified staff do day after day deserves recognition. We will be taking time to recognized them throughout the week, because we know many of the successes at SRHS could not happen without the work of our support staff.
We invite you to express your thanks to any support staff, in person or by sending a note or an email. (If you also send a note to an administrator, it will be put in the staff member's file.)
SRHS Basketball is HOT!
Both our Girls & Boys Basketball teams are Metro League Champs! The Girls are ranked #1 and the Boys are #3! The Playoff rounds started this week with the Girls winning against Canby and the Boys defeated West Albany. Both teams will play this weekend. You can follow their progress and see game schedules on the OSAA website.

Parent Survey
Southridge's goal is to improve access to IB for all students. We are in the beginning of the process so, as a self-assessment of our work around IB, we have partnered with other schools around the country to participate in an Equity Initiative.
To help us gather data, please complete this 10 minute survey by March 13, even if you don't have an IB student. This survey is optional, but we would love your thoughts and appreciate your feedback. http://ibo.keysurvey2.com/f/1193703/7d06/

District Volunteer Program
Volunteers are an important part of the WE in the District’s goal of 'WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success'. The District is very grateful for all those who share their valuable time and talents with students and staff in all BSD schools.
As a reminder, for the safety and welfare of students and staff, ALL volunteer activities must be coordinated and tracked through myvolunteerpage.com, the District’s online volunteer management system. Volunteers must sign in and sign out through the volunteer computer located in the school front office.
Want to know more about volunteer profiles, usernames/passcodes, background checks, adding/removing schools from your account, or you are no longer volunteering? These and other topics can be found on the district's Important Volunteer Reminders.
SRHS will have many one-time volunteer opportunities coming up in the spring. If you have questions and/or want to be a SRHS volunteer, contact our volunteer coordinator, Kristin Wood, at volunteer@southridgepto.com

SRHS Students Get Involved
Coincidently, winter weather moved in and schools were scheduled to close early, but students didn't let that cancel their plans. As school was being released, they gathered in front of the school with their handmade signs as passers-by waved and honked their acknowledgement until the buses departed for the day.

SafeOregon Tipline
SafeOregon Tipline
Creating a safe learning environment is a critical part of helping each child achieve academic success. SafeOregon is a statewide school safety tip line that gives kids, parents, schools and their communities a way to report safety threats or potential acts of violence. SafeOregon will give students another path for communicating with school administration when school safety incidents occur.
How does SafeOregon work?
Students, parents, and school staff can access SafeOregon through the web form on the SafeOregon website, or by text, email, live call and mobile app.
Why is there a need for a tip line system?
The number one reason why students do not report is the fear of retaliation from their peers. SafeOregon can be accessed from the privacy of a phone, home computer or other Internet equipped device, eliminating the possibility of being identified by another student and thus, decreasing the likelihood that a school safety threat would go unreported.
For more information, please visit the District’s SafeOregon Tipline webpage.
