Pericles was a member of an aristocratic family, he supported democracy also. he became a a leader democratic group. That strengthened the democracy. Pericles constructed the building of Parthenon between 447 B.C & 432 B.C. The Parthenon was built to honor the patron, or protector, of Athens, the goddess Athena.
Pericles' words had special meaning. They were spoken during the first year of a war with Sparta. It was a conflict with Sparta that ended Athens' golden age of accomplishment.

The Parthenon was named after her. There is a statue of her inside the Parthenon. She is the goddess of wisdom and war.

There are 10 different types of gods. Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Artemis, Athena, Ares, Aphrodite, Hermes, Poseidon, and Demeter. Wherever the Greeks lived, they built temples to the gods. Greeks worshiped gods led by Zeus, the king of gods. Zeus ruled the gods and humanity.
