Shiloh Point Elementary
October 2018 Newsletter
A Letter from Mr. Hershey
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Welcome back from fall break! I hope that all of you got to spend some quality family time and were able to get some R & R.
I want to say thank you for the amazing contributions that you have made through our Read-a-thon fundraiser. We can't say thank you enough to all of our parent volunteers, staff, and students for making it a huge success. All contributions that were collected will be designated towards our Z-space laptops (already ordered!) and professional learning.
One of the things that we have gone back to this year is implementation of a "monthly mindset." My belief is that one of the most important components of learning develops from establishing not only academic skills, but also growing soft skills such as self-awareness skills, self-management skills, social skills, building relationships, and decision-making skills. This framework is supported through the work of CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning.) At Shiloh Point, we strive to create that feeling of working together to support each other in our growth. You may have heard your students use phrases like "We are Connected" or "100% Accountable," but what do these phrases really mean and how do we use them in partnership to make sure that we are not only building academic skills, but also the soft skills in our students that are necessary for them to be productive citizens. Please read the summary of all of The 7 Mindsets by clicking here. There is a brief description of each mindset as well as specific things that you can do to support your child at home. If you have any questions about the 7 Mindsets, please feel free to contact either one of our counselors, Kevin Harris or Kristi Logan.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me should you need anything. We are here to serve your family. Thank you for all of your continued support as we partner to develop our students.
Sincerely,
Derrick Hershey
Principal

Volunteer to Read
Please consider volunteering to read to Shiloh Point's kindergarten and 1st grade students. We are looking for volunteers to sign up for a 30 minute time slot to read to a small group of students. We will have books available for you to read or you can bring your own favorites to share. Please note that this is not an opportunity to read to your own child, but to children chosen by the teacher. If you would like to read specifically in your own child's classroom, please reach out to your child's teacher directly for volunteer opportunities.
