St. Luke Weekly Memo
January 11, 2021
Happy New Year to our St. Luke Families!
2020 was quite a year like no other! We now turn to a New Year in the hopes that it will bring us all peace, love and joy!
Thank-you to all our teachers and families for all their hard work and effort in navigating our online learning as we returned to school in January. The hard work of the staff and flexibility of the families made student learning during these 3 days a success. Our Grade 7 and 8 students who were online since the end of November also made a tremendous effort to ensure the continuation of their studies. We had a few minor technology issues and glitches but overall our whole school community did their part of the well-being and learning of students.
We are greatly looking forward to having our students return to the school on January 11th. The classrooms are just not the same without our students' smiles, laughs, learning and conversations. Upon return we will be strictly following our COVID protocols to the full extent including our staggered recess and lunchtime breaks. Our protocols will return to the ones put in place when students returned to school in September.
We look forward to a full return to studies as we celebrate the New Year together as a school community.
Blessings in this beautiful New Year,
Mrs. Hinger

Chaplain's Corner- Saint of the Month St. Teresa of Avila
This month we are focusing on St. Teresa of Avila. Here are some interesting facts on our Saint for January.
1. She felt that a day when she couldn’t read a new book was a day lost.
2. With the complicity of her mother and behind the back of her strict father, she read books about the great deeds of knights, which were very popular at the time.
3. There are hypotheses that suggest that Teresa was part of a network of women who exchanged books.
4. She was independent and autonomous. When she understood that God was calling her to be a nun, and after she told her father (who rejected the idea), she decided to leave her parents’ house, and she went to the monastery of the Incarnation (in Avila).
5. The day she entered the monastery (November 2, 1535), the bells were ringing for All Souls day.
As a community we are reflecting upon ways we can be Christ's hands and feet within this world, based on St. Teresa's poem.
Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which He looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which He blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are His body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.
— St. Teresa of Ávila (attributed)
Sacrament of Confirmation - Classes start at OLPH January 16th!
Preparing people to receive sacraments is a time-honoured practice of the Church. Faith formation is a lifelong process. Sacraments are milestones—signposts— along this faith journey. They are like road signs that guide us on the way to holiness, continually point us towards Christ, and ultimately lead us to our final destination which is heaven. Every time we participate in one of these sacred moments, we encounter Christ.
OLPH Confirmation Preparation will be done in a series of 5 monthly classes (January-May) for students to attend at the church with a parent or sponsor. They will attend a weekday Mass (pre-registration, health screening and all other church covid protocols in place) and stay for a lesson on that month’s theme to follow. There is also the workbook for the family to complete at home. Confirmations will be celebrated in May the week of Pentecost. The parent orientation will meet via Zoom rather than in the church.
More information including the Registration Form, Class Sign Up details, and all the dates can be found here: https://www.olph.ca/sacraments/confirmation-2/

Independence, initiative, decision making, creativity, the ability to learn, relationships and feelings of self-worth - all have their beginnings in early childhood. We believe that each child is unique and, together with parents as our partners, we build upon children's natural curiosity and spontaneity, encouraging and supporting them as they take their first step into school. To register for Kindergarten in the 2021-2022 school year, your child must be 5 years old by December 31, 2021. This program will run Tuesday/Thursday and alternating Fridays.
