Washington Schools See Impressive Gains in Reading Proficiency
MindPlay is a web-based reading program that delivers one-to-one, personalized, systematic, reading instruction. After nearly eight months on MindPlay Virtual Reading Coach, district third-through-sixth graders using the program saw “critical” readers decrease from 41 to 18 percent, and “exceeding” readers increase from 5 to 47 percent.
North Elementary reports their critical reader rate reduced from 29 percent to nine percent, with principal Jay Wildman pointing to some of the biggest gains among ELL students. “The program meets students where they are, and for the first time, we have access to detailed data which makes it easy for teachers to implement the program and to keep track of each student’s progress,” he says.
Washington Community Schools will be watching the performance of incoming seventh graders in the coming year and plan to continue to use it with grades three through six in 2018-2019. Assistant superintendent Kevin Frank says, "Ideally, the district will be able to expand the program at some point up through eighth grade for students with the greatest need."

Appeals on Wheels visits Washington High School
Students have the opportunity to experience a real courtroom in action!
Traveling oral arguments, or Appeals on Wheels, help Hoosiers learn more about the judiciary's indispensable role in Indiana government. They also provide opportunities for Court of Appeals judges to meet and talk with a broad range of citizens in relatively informal settings.
Traveling oral arguments are just like oral arguments in the Court's Statehouse courtroom. A bailiff calls the court into session, the judges enter, and lawyers for the parties present their arguments to the judges and answer the judges' questions.
One difference: After traveling oral arguments, the judges usually entertain audience questions about the law and the judiciary in general, but not about the case they've just heard.
