Halloween Changes - - Cambios de Halloween
For the first time in many years, students will be allowed to wear Halloween costumes on October 31st, 2018. Given this allowance, we would like to make families aware of the expectations for costumes and behavior. If your child plans on dressing up on October 31, please take a moment to discuss the expectations with them. Please understand that we want the children to have fun, but it is still a school day and we want to ensure that quality instruction is still able to take place.
1. Absolutely NO simulated weapons of any kind. No pretend swords, guns, grenades, knives, etc. Nothing that could possibly be perceived as a weapon or simulated weapon is allowed.
2. Costumes must comply with the D100 student dress code. No short shorts or skirts, revealing tops, etc. Please use good judgment.
3. No gang- related attire allowed. Dressing up like a “gangster” will not be allowed.
4. Hats that are part of a costume are allowed. However, just wearing a ballcap and/or sunglasses and saying you are a baseball player is not a costume. If a student wants to wear a baseball uniform with a ball cap, then that is considered a costume.
5. Costumes should not be so large or obtrusive that they prevent the child from sitting comfortably in his/her desk, or so obtrusive that they block the view in the classroom of those sitting behind the student.
6. Student costumes need to be respectful of body images and should not emphasize negative stereotypes of any person, gender, or ethnicity. Cultural sensitivity is required.
7. Students should not interfere with another person’s costume. Students spend a lot of time, thought, money, and energy in preparing their costume. We do not want their costume damaged by another student.
8. No masks are allowed, including anything that covers up a student’s face or any part of their face. Additionally, faces may be painted, but only small portions (a scar, for example). The entire face may not be covered. Hair may be sprayed a different color, but no colored hair spray is allowed on campus. These items will be confiscated and not returned if brought to school.
9. Students will still be required to participate in PE class. Costumes will need to be easily stored in gym lockers, and students will be required to change into PE uniforms.
10. NO CLOWN COSTUMES
Thank you for taking the time to discuss these expectations with your children. We truly appreciate the time our Freedom families invest in their child’s education.
Happy Halloween!
1. Absolutamente NO armas simuladas de ningún tipo. No simule espadas, pistolas, granadas, cuchillos, etc.
¡Feliz Halloween!
6th Grade Math - - Matemáticas de 6to grado
We are continuing to work hard in 6th grade math! The students have been taught to explain or show their thinking by proving their answers with math, pictures, diagrams, or graphs.
We finished up our first unit on geometry a few weeks ago and have started our second unit introducing ratios. Working with ratios is a major focus of 6th grade math and the students are off to a great start! We started the unit with discussing proper ratio language and learning how to represent ratios with diagrams. Then we discovered how ratios are used when making recipes and even did a taste test to prove it! We also defined equivalent ratios and used that knowledge to create double number lines. Most recently, we discussed unit price and how it is important when going to the grocery store. We will be finishing up unit two in the next couple of weeks.
Since last month, 7th grade math students have been utilizing their understanding of scaled figures to determine if relationships between quantities are proportional. For example, students are determining how many cups of rice would be needed to feed a group of people. Students are building their understanding of how to prove if quantities are proportional to one another. Moving forward, students will continue to analyze constants of proportionality in tables, graphs, and equations and finding correlations between them.
