2nd & 3rd Grade News/ NOTICIAS
Mrs. O'Rourke's Class
August 26, 2019
Welcome back to school! It feels good to be back in school again! I hope your child has been enjoying the first few days back to school. We have been working on a lot of team building activities. We have been focusing on being kind and respectful to everyone and creating a fun, safe, and exciting learning environment. We have an awesome group of students who work very well together! Our school year is off to an amazing start!
We are still finalizing some schedules. We had to make a few changes to our speech schedule. As soon as the schedules are finalized, I will be sending home a copy of each child's individual schedule. Our library day will be on Thursdays. We will start our library check out on September 5. As you know, the students can borrow 2 books from the library each week. We have a library bin in the room so they can bring the books back to school any day but, they must return all books by Thursday in order to borrow 2 more books from the library.
Our lunch time is 11:00 AM. The students get pretty hungry in the afternoon (I imagine they were used to eating snack whenever they were hungry in the summer)! You are welcome to send a snack to school with your child each day. The students can eat their snack whenever they are hungry in the afternoon as they work. They are also welcome to leave a water bottle on their desks. I do keep a bin of snacks at school in case anyone is hungry and forgot to bring a snack. If you are ever at Cosco or Sam's Club and would like to pick up some extra snacks for our snack bin, that would be very appreciated!
I will send out this digital newsletter on S'more each month. As you know, we are no longer able to use Facebook in the classroom. This year, I am going to try a new classroom app that our host school, Townline, uses called Bloomz. Bloomz is a closed classroom app for teachers and parents that can be accessed by invite only. The app will allow messages, photos, announcements and alerts to go right to your phone or laptop. You can download the Bloomz app to your phone and/or your laptop. If you would like to get a text message when there is a new post, once you sign up to the Bloomz app, you need to reply YES BLOOMZ on your phone.
***If you would like to join our Bloomz classroom closed group, email me the emails and/or cell phone numbers you would like me to input and I will send you a link!
I do update our classroom site on the SEDOL site (sedol.us). There is an updated calendar and some pictures on the site right now. As soon as I get a schedule finalized, I will post the schedule too! The link to the site is below on this newsletter.
The best way to reach me is through email during the day aorourke@sedol.us (feel free to email me in spanish if that is your prefered communication and I will have it translated). You can also reach me on my direct line at 847-986-7021.
Have a great week!
Literacy
During reading time this week, we have been reading books together about friendship, kindness and self-esteem. On Monday, we read a book called, Only One Me, and then we all painted a rock to reflect our individual personalities! They LOVE to paint. I am really trying to cultivate an environment where the students will LOVE to read books!
During the week, I will be assessing each student on their guided reading levels. Once all the assessments are complete, we will start our guided reading groups. Each student will have at least 30 minutes EVERY DAY of individual reading time to work on the specific skills they need to move up to the next reading level.
In September, I will be sending home a reading log with each student. The students should read for about 20 minutes a night during the school week. Don't worry if they miss a night or two. The students will write the number of minutes they read on the calendar. On the back of the calendar, they can write the books that they read. They can read the same books over and over if they want! They can read to a sibling or a friend. At the end of the month, when the students bring back their reading logs, they get a prize from our prize box. We don't count how many days they read on the calendar, we just want them to find some time at home to read!
MATHEMATICS Matematicas
We read a book called, Solve It, this week to start off our math lesson! During the next couple of weeks, we will be doing a review of last year's work. We will be playing math review games and reviewing the steps we take to solve word problems. The students will be creating word problems on an app on their iPads for their friends to solve!
In September, we will start to have math homework. To help the students stay organized, I will be sending homework home in a red folder marked "homework" so it is clear when the students have homework from my class.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES Estudios Sociales
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
¡Hicimos nuestro primer experimento STEM!
