Notes from the Nurse

February is American Heart Month. The heart is a little larger than a fist and beats around 100,000 times a day. This month is a perfect time to learn about the risks of heart disease and ways you can keep your heart healthy. Shockingly, half of Americans have at least one of the top three risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking (courtesy of cdc.gov). Other behaviors that increase your risk of heart disease include obesity, diabetes, lack of exercise, and unhealthy eating. You are in control when it comes to your heart, a few simple life style changes could lower your risk and keep your heart healthy.

  1. Quit Smoking: it is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.

  2. Manage your health conditions: if you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, work with your doctor to find medications to help lower them.

  3. Heart-healthy changes: try to fill at least half your plate with fruits and vegetables and aim for low sodium options.

  4. Be active: get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.

Sincerely,

Sabrina Cyr BSN, RN
