In reading, our first topic of study will be Point of View. We will be studying the differences between first person, second person, third-person limited, and third-person omniscient. Students will also be able to identify the perspective of the narrator and tell how it impacts the story.
For writing, we will be practicing creating strong paragraphs using a topic sentence and many supporting details. Paragraph structure is very important to perfect to be able to advance in our larger writing pieces. The entire first quarter is focused on free writing and sharing.
AR goals have also been set and can be found in your child's planner. As homework each night, students should be reading for at least 30 minutes a night to help them work towards this goal.
40 Book Challenge!
ALL students who participate, regardless of how many books they read, will be invited to our 40 Book Challenge celebration at the end of the year.
Students are really excited to get started with this challenge, and love to share about the books they are reading! Make sure you ask your child about their goals and ask them to share their reading as well!
If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Shoup.
Science and Social Studies
Science:
We took our first Science test this week over the Engineering Design Process and participated in our last STEM challenge for the unit where we worked in our table groups to use materials to build a zipline for a ping pong ball astronaut. We have continued to recognize the importance of defining the problem, taking time to imagine possible solutions, making a plan, creating a design or prototype, and making any adjustments or improvements on the design to allow it to work. It was really amazing to see the scientific thinking and the designs students came up with to get the astronaut back from the moon to Earth. We will continue using the Engineering design process and participating in other STEM scientific thinking activities as we move through our other units of study throughout the year.
Our next unit of study will be matter and energy which we will begin next week.
Social Studies:
We have been working on finishing our Map Skills unit and have been exploring how the different parts of a map such as a map scale, map key, symbols, title, inset maps, and locator maps work together to give information about locations and places on the Earth’s surface. We learned how to create a map scale for our “Create a Map” project and also worked on using our rulers and a map scale to help calculate actual distances between places on a map. We finished the week this week discussing how information can be shared using different types of maps. We will be taking our first Social Studies test over Map Skills on Tuesday, September 17. A study guide was sent home with students last Friday to help them study and prepare for the upcoming test. If your child needs an extra copy of the study guide to prepare for the Map Skills test on Tuesday, he or she can pick one up from the moon table in my classroom. Our “Create a Map” project was due today and will be the last project of our Map Skills unit.
We will soon begin our unit on the Regions of the United States where we will be taking quizzes over the states and capitals in each region. I shared some websites with students in class last Friday that they can use at home to help them start studying their states and capitals for this unit. I am including the links to these sites below.
