MSD Highly Capable Program Referral Window
Every fall, we start the process to identify new students to receive highly capable services. As defined by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), highly capable students are those who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experiences, or environments. The mission of the Monroe School District Highly Capable Program is to identify and serve highly capable K12 students by providing a consistent, challenging and supportive educational environment within the resources of the district.
Any student in grade K, 1, 3, 5-11 with parent/guardian permission may be referred by staff, family, or community members. All 2nd and 4th graders are universally screened and therefore do NOT require a referral form. The nomination process for the Highly Capable Program opens on November 7th and closes on December 9th. When a referral is received, the screening process will be triggered to determine a student’s eligibility for highly capable services. The screening dates are TBD.

Cold Weather Reminders
- PLEASE do not drop off student's before 8:35AM. It is very cold for students to be standing out there for so long and we don't have any supervision available or anyone to let them into the cafeteria before then.
- The weather has changed. Please be sure your students are dressed for the cold and rainy season. If you are able to send extra clothing items in their backpack, it may help keep your student dry and warm as the Health room is limited on available clothes that can be borrowed.
- Now that winter is upon us, we wanted to remind you of our inclement weather procedures. If road conditions are deemed unsafe, we will be delaying or canceling school for that day. Canceled school days may need to be made up at the end of the school year. These days are included on our published calendars as "snow make up" days.

Reminders
- Main St. crosswalk supervision starts at 8:40AM
- Our School hours 8:55AM-3:25PM, Monday-Friday
- Parents, please do not get out of your car during student drop off. We have assigned staff to open the doors to let students out of the car.
- EVERY FRIDAY is EARLY DISMISSAL at 2:25PM
- Students may arrive at school as early as 8:35 if they are having breakfast at school.
- Please do not use the crosswalk in front of the office, the only crosswalk that should be used at dismissal is the one in front of the gym. Students should not be using the crosswalk alone.
- No pets allowed on campus.
- Please keep traffic moving. If your student is not ready to get out of the car at drop off, please park and walk with the student.
- Please make sure we have updated phone numbers, emails and emergency contacts for your students.
- All Frank Wagner and Leaders in Learning students will receive FREE breakfast and lunch this school year. If you have children in other schools, you will need to complete a Free or Reduced Lunch Form.
- ID's are required to sign students out. If someone besides parents, guardians or emergency contacts are picking up a student, please call the front office to let us know ahead of time.
- We cannot call students to the office ahead of time. We will call them once you are present and have shown ID.
- Please do not line up at car pick up before 3:00PM Monday-Thursday and 2:00PM on Friday's.
- If you are bringing treats for your child(rens) class, they must be store bought. We cannot accept homemade treats.
Attendance Matters
“Absences add up! Missing just 2 days a month
means a child misses 10% of the school year.” -Attendance Counts
As we fall into systems and routines, we know that your child may need to miss school at times throughout the year. We track students' attendance closely to ensure safety, and we worry when your child is not at school. We ask for your help in letting us know that your child will be or is absent as early as possible. If we do not hear from you before 10:30 on the day of the absence, you will receive an automatic robocall. It is also helpful to briefly explain why your child is absent so we can plan for their return.
Did you know?
Absences can be excused ANYTIME (24/7) through Family Access or by leaving a message at the school (360-804-3201)
You can let us know about an absence as early as YOU know about it - we track future absences
If your child will be gone for more than 3 days in a row, we ask that you complete the Extended Absence Form so we can plan appropriately for these extended absences
You will receive a robocall from the school every day we have not heard from you about your child’s absence prior to 10:30am

Volunteers
Requirements for Volunteering
Our top priority is keeping our students, staff and volunteers safe. Therefore, we require all volunteers, including field trip chaperones, to submit a volunteer application packet and be approved in order to spend time on campus or with our students. Volunteer applications must be submitted annually and include:
- Personal Information Collection
- Statement affirming understanding of: Confidentiality, Discrimination and Prohibiting Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying laws and procedures
- Criminal History Disclosure/WSP Criminal Background Check
- Acknowledgement that our Volunteer Handbook has been read and verification that all volunteer requirements will be followed at all times
All volunteers, including one-time volunteers and visitors must:
- Have an approved MSD volunteer application on file
- Sign in and out of the office and always wear an ID badge while on school grounds
- Wear appropriate attire
- Show respect for all students and staff
- Maintain confidentiality by sharing concerns regarding students with school staff only
- Call the school if you are unable to attend a scheduled volunteer shift
Leave all personal items (including cell phones) in a locked car or at home
Parent Square
This year we’ll be using ParentSquare to communicate with you about our school including newsletters, events, reminders, and more. Note: ParentSquare may not be used by all classrooms as it is optional for teaching staff to use but will be the main source of communication for school-wide information.
