Parents, we need your help! Please help your child work out a plan for charging their Chromebooks nightly. It is very disruptive to both teaching and learning when students come to class unprepared.

Here is the schedule for the next two weeks during testing.
Please make sure the kids are well rested and prepared with a charged Chromebook.

American History

This week in American History students will be learning learning about the ending of World War I and how it contributed to future world problems. We will have a test over WWI on 4/10. Students will be handed out study guides next week as well. We will then shift our focus to the 1920’s museum project. More information to come!

Ms. Finocchiaro:
We are well into our class novel, The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. I’ve very much enjoyed our class conversations and hearing all the students’ ideas. I’ve been impressed by their insights and consistent focus, as well . Our class work is exploring figurative language use, vocabulary use, and character and plot development.
In The Wednesday Wars, one of the repeated themes is “The quality of mercy is not strained,” therefore we will not have a reading log during testing week.
Ms. Childress:
This week in ELA students are reviewing parts of speech. Students have a new packet that will be due at the end of next week, May 3rd. There are small assignments in Canvas that students have to practice the various parts of speech. Students will need to keep up with those assignments. We are also reading our latest class novel. If students need to read at home, access to their novels can be found both in Canvas and Actively Learn. MAP testing and NWEA testing will be coming in the next two weeks. We will be reviewing some test-taking skills this week as well.

We started our last unit of the year! Unit 10 is on data and statistics. Students are learning to find the mean, median, mode, range, and median absolute deviation for a set of data. Students will also learn to display data in box-and-whisker plots, dot plots, frequency tables, and histograms. Instead of a unit test, students will be doing a project where they come up with three statistical questions. They will be asking their classmates the questions and analyzing the data. Students are welcome to display their findings on a poster board or on paper that I can provide. I do not have a budget to get poster boards for students, so that will have to be provided from home.
Science

We have been working on pulling together everything that the kids have learned about how the energy from the core and the sun cause the surface of the Earth to change in big and small ways over long and short amounts of time. The kids modeled external processes today with an Oreo cookie. I have a few notes for you about grades:
The plate boundary formatives have been graded and entered. If there is no grade, that means that it is missing and needs to be turned in as soon as possible. Anyone receiving less than a 10 out of 10 is welcome to redo it for a better score. I will have extra copies in my room.
The plate boundaries summative assessment is currently being graded. I will get these updated in Canvas and SIS by the end of the weekend. Anyone is welcome to redo this assessment as well. I will hand them back on Monday. Most kids just didn’t answer all parts of the questions and they can just add on to their original paper and turn it back in.
We have a test over the internal and external processes on Monday, May 6. This assessment is really heavy on vocabulary. The kids are going to make a study tool in class on Tuesday. Please quiz them throughout the week on how and where different rocks are formed.
After the test, we will return to EcoBottles. The kids will present their results to their peers and reflect individually on the successes or shortcomings of their designs. This will be a summative grade.
