CHS Parent Update

Early Update
I hope you all have a very enjoyable weekend. This is a first for me. I usually draft the update during the week and then wait to send it out on Sunday. Well, we now have early release on Fridays and my bulletin is ready to go so, what do you know, you're getting it now. I look forward to a restful weekend with a BBQ at a friends house tonight, Maybe a workout on Saturday (note - 'maybe'), a few household chores, with some luck a trip to the river to catch some fish, and a Ultimate Frisbee game on Sunday (one of my all time favorite games). We had a really strong start to the school year and I am excited to watch our students grow. I am also excited to learn our new students names and get to know them. I was fortunate enough to have time to get into almost every single teachers classroom for a brief moment this week. I missed five and hope to get into those next week.
Enjoy your weekend and rest up for a productive week. Go Lancers!!
In The Know
Transportation - We recognize that some bus routes may be running a but late. This is an annual phenomenon that happens around the same time every year. The issue appears to be that many families are driving their students to school the first few days of class - not necessarily a bad thing at all. It does however mean we experience increased and disrupted traffic flow at each school. The result is that buses are slightly delayed at each site with a snowballing effect that results in fairly significant delays at sites at the end of all routes. Every year we see bus ridership increase in the next week or so and traffic patterns will become a bit more normalized such that buses are running more or less on time again. Please let me know if you see this concern or it doesn't change in the next couple of weeks.
General School Support - School funding is always a tricky situation. Year after year we deplete our fund balances to support students in need, teachers in need and to support other general school support needs. As always we are happy to benefit from gracious donors over time. In a future Parent Update I will be providing a link to the Eugene Education Foundation grants and donations page where donations can be made directly to Churchill High School. We use donated funds to support students in need (bus passes, food, supplies, graduation, sports fees, etc.). If you are able and willing to offer any level of support we are deeply indebted to your generosity. I believe in the power of a strong public education and I champion the opportunities we provide to students. It couldn't be done without your support. Thank you for thinking of us.
Fragrances - Please be conscious of fragrances that are worn to school. We want to recognize that there are several members of or school community who have allergies, asthma, migraines or other conditions that are worsened by breathing in strong aromas. We want everyone to feel better and breathe easier. Please avoid using, spraying, displaying or wearing any product or item that fills the air with scents or aromas. Thank you for your cooperation in making the school environment at Churchill healthier for all of us.
Upcoming College and Career and Counseling Center Events:
13th- Navigating High School Information Night for all Churchill Families - 6:30pm in the Auditorium. Let us help you plan for what's ahead. We will discuss graduation requirements, good practices for each grade level, where to go for help and much more. Counselors for each grade level and College & Career Center and School-to-Career staff will be on hand to answer your questions.
24th - Rotary Youth Exchange Information Meeting - 7:00pm in the Library. Rotary Youth Exchange is a program that sends high school students for a year of study abroad to learn a new culture and create international understanding. They attend high school and stay with Host Families (usually 3 during the school year). The goal is to help them learn a new culture and language, and to create “young ambassadors” who will contribute to international understanding during the rest of their lives.
25th - Financial Aid and Scholarship Information Night - 6:30pm in the Auditorium. You will have the opportunity to hear from experts in the fields of federal and state financial aid, completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and finding and applying for scholarships.

Kudos
Kudos to Jake Reents. I (Matt Myers) have made about 19 separate requests for tech support in the last couple weeks and his average response time is about 2 minutes. Jake you are a rad dude!!!
Kudos to the 9th grade advisory team. Working with this group has greatly reduced my (Matt Myers) beginning of the year anxiety. Great ideas, flexibility, professionalism, and extreme work ethic are the words to describe this team!
Kevin Summerfield - Thank you for breaking bread with me and sharing your curry dish. It was wonderful and a heartfelt gesture. I definitely enjoyed it, but I appreciate your pure heart more than anything.
Huge Kudos to the Freshmen Orientation Team - Your work with our Freshmen was fantastic. You got them organized, engaged, informed, and connected to the school climate. Your work with the Lancer Leaders was significant and impactful. The focus on Freshmen Friday in the past has always had a special place in our hearts and this last weeks focus on Freshmen not only matched that effort, but blew it our of the water. It included staff, students, and a full scale BBQ. Thank you to Ian Ogden, Matt Myers, Misael Flores, Mary Hicks, Sarah Ruggiero, Mike Sterling, Gene Chism, Casey Tiemann, Renee Neil, Holly Albone, Erin Crews, Debbie Levy, and others (all staff who greeted 9th graders and let Lancer Leaders use their room for the morning), and the countless others who provided heaps of work and effort. I appreciate you all.
