Sunshine State Young Readers Award Program

The Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivation program in Florida for students in grades K-8. The program is sponsored by the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) and began in 1983. The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for personal satisfaction, based on interest rather than reading level. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Together these two programs create our extended independent reading program to help students improve their reading enjoyment, fluency and comprehension. For more information visit the Florida Association of Media Specialists website.

SSYRA Jr. Program K-2

This is the newest reading award program sponsored by FAME: the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr. (SSYRA Jr)! The mission of the SSYRA Jr. program is to develop student interest in reading for pleasure by exposing them to a wide range of appropriate literature. Sunshine State Jr. books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Students are encouraged to listen to these books read to them, read them in a small group setting, or read independently to develop skills in fluency and comprehension. Students will be eligible to vote in the spring after listening/reading at least three of the books. The winning author and illustrator will be recognized at the annual FAME conference. For additional information visit the Florida Association of Media Specialists website.

Our SSYRA Reward Program at Valley Ridge

Each year students are challenged to read books from the Sunshine State Young Reader Award list. There are 15 books on each of the lists. We will reward our readers in grades 3 to 8 with Brag Tags. Our reward and quizzing program will begin August 30, 2021 and can be accomplished at school or home through on Schoology.

To participate in the SSYRA rewards program, students are asked to first read and agree to the honor pledge posted below.

We will be utilizing a quizzing system within Schoology. Once students have read a book, they can go to the Media Center Schoology Course that corresponds with their grade level and take a quiz. Message one of the media staff which book you would like to quiz on and we will assign the quiz to you.

If the student passes the quiz with 70% accuracy or greater, they are eligible to receive their brag tag and a Schoology badge. We'll provide the brag tag to your teacher.

The following are incentives for reading each of the books at Valley Ridge this year.

Our SSYRA Jr. Program at Valley Ridge Academy Grades K-2

Each year students are challenged to read books from the Sunshine State Young Readers Junior list. There are 15 books on the list. 10 of the books are picture books. 5 of the books are chapter books.

We begin introducing kindergartners & first graders to the SSYRA program and books during their media center visits, and in November we begin reading them aloud. All students in K & 1 should have heard at least 3 SSYRA books, which means they can participate in the voting in April.

We kick off our Junior program with second grade in October. Once students have read at least 3 books independently and passed a quiz with 70% accuracy or greater, they are eligible to vote for their favorite book.

To participate in the SSYRA Jr rewards program, 2nd grade students are asked to first read the honor pledge posted in their Schoology VRA SSYRA group.

Due to our move to digital learning we will be utilizing a quizzing system within Schoology. Once students have read a book they can go to the Media Center Schoology course that corresponds with their grade level and take a quiz. Message one of the Media staff which book you would like to quiz on and we will assign the quiz to you.

If the student passes the quiz with 70% accuracy or greater, they are eligible to receive their brag tag and Schoology badge. We'll provide the brag tag to your teacher or in the mail.

MackinVia Ebooks

VRA students and families have access to over 800 e-books and audio books to read via MackinVIA. Some books are interactive, some can be used as a read aloud, while others are simply a standard book to be read online. Families can use MackinVIA to read e-books anywhere they have access to a computer, tablet or other Internet connected device. In addition books can be downloaded for a 1 week checkout period. Student usernames are their student numbers with the S and the password is the same as the password for school computers or HAC. If you don't know the username and password, you can enter as a guest with the school initials and mascot as the password and leave the location blank.

Battle of the Books - 3-5 and 6-8

Battle of the Books is an exciting reading competition for 3rd-5th grade students and 6th-8th grade students. Each school in SJCSD will select a team of 5 students to represent their school at the district battle. There will be one team for 3-5 and one team for 6-8. The battles will be held in March 2022 for grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. The Battles will be held virtually this year.

In order to try out for our school teams, students must read a minimum of 10 current (SSYRA) books by January 11, 2022. On or about January 15, 2022, all eligible students will be given a Battle Test to determine who will be on our VRA teams. The Battle Test will be composed of quotes from each of the 15 books on a given list. Students must determine which book the quote came from.

Students are not required to read all 15 books to be eligible for the battle team but the more you read the better you will do on the Battle Test. If your goal is to make the team, please see Mrs. Ayrish Booysen for a permission slip to be signed by parents. This permission forms let's parents know that some books on the SSYRA lists may not be a good fit for every student.
