THANKS TO YOU, Community 4 raised $267.25 from the donations collected at the PTSA Polar Express. A variety of items such as Rainbow Loom jewelry, butterfly bookmarks, butterfly ornaments, butterfly wire sculptures, butterfly magnets, butterfly watercolor paintings, and PRS Christmas tree ornaments were available for donations. Proceeds will go towards funding the PRS Butterfly Garden, that is coming soon!

PRS Community 4 Learners participating in a worldwide Hour of Code program. Ask to see what the created!

In celebration of Computer Science Education Week, our community 4 learners participated in the Hour of Code movement. This global campaign introduces a student to computer coding basics, which nurtures problem-solving, logic, and creativity. We also explored computers from the inside out through our reverse engineering computer dissections.

Thinking, Innovating, and Creating at PRS!


*Investigate to determine changes in energy resulting from increases or decreases in speed that occur when objects collide.

Day 3 of this project is this week. REVISE, REBUILD, RETEST! I CAN'T WAIT!

Get ready to put those engineering minds to work while we fulfill our PRS mission statement of thinking, innovating, and creating. Learners will engineer a device that will protect an egg when dropped from the second story of our school with ONLY the materials provided. Learners have been investigating different increases and decreases of speed to see what occurs when objects collide. They will now take that knowledge and go deeper. It's time to "show what you know." We will be working on this activity for 3 weeks during PBL time! See the Prezi below for more information.


*Use context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase

*Use common grade appropriate affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word

*Read and comprehend literature with grades 4/5 text complexity

Our standards for this week will remain the same as we continue to work on reading comprehension, word decoding, and allow students to present their Kensuke's Kingdom travel guides.

*Compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated, including the difference between first and third person narrations.

* Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

* Draw evidence from informal texts to support reflection.


*Explain Alabama's economic and military role during the Civil War.

Examples: economic—production of iron products, munitions, textiles, and ships

military—provision of military supplies through the Port of Mobile, provision of an armament enter at Selma

*Recognizing military leaders from Alabama during the Civil War

*Comparing roles of women on the home front and the battlefront during and after the Civil War

*Explaining economic conditions as a result of the Civil War, including the collapse of the economics structure, destruction of the transportation infrastructure, and high casualty rates

At PRS learners will become more aware of the wider world whilst respecting and valuing diversity. Moreover, learners will take responsibility for their actions and we want learners to have a belief that they can make a difference. So, this week Community Four learners will continue to learn about life on the home front during the Civil War. However, conflicts often lead to huge numbers of innocent people leaving their homes to escape the threat of war and violence. This happened throughout the South during the Civil War, as a large number of the battles were fought in the South. If these people relocate to a different country they become known as ‘refugees’. If they go to a different area in their own country they are called ‘internally displace people’. People fleeing conflict will often leave their homes in a hurry, leaving everything behind so that they can travel as fast as possible. The children will brainstorm needs and wants whilst considering what people might have needed then and today. Children will then design a product to help refugees around the world today.


*Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Students will continue to work through the standard algorithm of division with and without remainders this week. Partner math, small group instruction, and flash card review will be utilized in class to keep learners engaged. PLEASE ask your learner to show you how to divide so you can see where they are with this standard. Keep practicing this multiplication facts! Lots of students reassessed on Friday and moved to green. CONGRATS! We will begin to put these skills to use as we plan the picnic tables and benches that will be located around the PRS campus.

Questions to ask your learner:

Which number is the quotient?

Where is the divisor?

What number is the dividend?

Could you show me how to do the standard algorithm of division?

Can you show me how to check your quotient once you have found it?

How do you use division every day?

*Get your child's account information and check to see what information and resources are being sent daily. Accounts to check: EDMODO/ GMAIL/ FRESH GRADE




*Ask your child SPECIFIC questions about their learning.

Example: "I read in your email that you are learning about speed and energy, what activities did you do to learn about this? Which activity did you enjoy the most? Can you tell me how speed and energy are related?" Ask them what their "TWEET FOR THE DAY" would be if they were going to sum up their day. This is a few powerful, but brief words about their day.


Find something your child is passionate about and fuel that passion by encouraging them to read about it. The more they read, the more they will learn new vocabulary words. Get the to describe what they've read to you in detail. You might even read a book together and discuss it.

What is Edmodo?

Learners and Lead Learners can reach out to one another and connect by sharing ideas, problems, and helpful tips. A lead learner can assign and assess work on Edmodo; students can GET and GIVE feedback from the entire class on Edmodo. Ask your child about "Two STARS and a WISH." Think of it as a "walled garden" where collaboration and learning can take place in a safe environment.

What is Fresh Grade?

"As parents, we know everything about our children’s habits. We know what gives them nightmares and why at 4:00pm they get a bit cranky. We know it all, right? Nothing is more important to us than our child’s development, yet we have a blind spot – the classroom.

FreshGrade gives parents a window into the classroom through a secure digital portfolio for your child. Capturing their learning as it happens, and tracking their progress." It also increases communication and collaboration between parents, learners and Lead Learners through digital portfolios.

How can my child move from "not meeting expectations to meeting expectations? While we continue to support and facilitate you child's learning during the school day, you can help at home too. Work with your learner on areas where they are struggling by using the individual Lead Learner feedback (that was given specifically to you child) on Fresh Grade to facilitate their learning at home. Once your child feels they are ready to be re-assessed, just have them drop us and email.

How can I understand what the standard is asking and where can I get extra resources for the standards?

Below is a link to the Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX) website that you can use to get both the explanation of the standard AND resources to go along with them. It will also help you go above and below the 4th grade standard.
