Message from Ms. Backer, our principal
Lemonade in February??? Yep! It’s time for The Lemonade War. All of our colts will be reading this great book during the month of February. Each class will be immersed in the study of characters Jessie and Evan. Students will examine what motivates their decisions in this story and deciding whether they made the best choices. We have many activities from which the teachers can pick and choose.
Students will also discuss the function of charities in this story. Then on Tuesday evening, February 19, we will have “Lemon Night” along with the Book Fair, when students will get to make a lemonade volcano, make invisible ink, build a lemon tower, play the math game: Lemonade Shake Up, and create new flavors of lemonade. During this event, we will be collecting money to donate to the charity, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to Stamp-Out Childhood Cancer.
Students are so excited! We have so much planned to keep the farm yellow for the whole month! Be sure to check out the calendar below to see what chapter we are on and what our word of the day is.
In addition, next week is our Grandparents Week. We open our foyer up for any grandparent that would like to come spend some special time with their grandchild during lunch. Please check out the flyers below for more information.
Thank you again for supporting all of our teachers, staff, and students are CFES!

Counselor Corner
Looking forward to a fun February, our focus for this month is RESILIENCE. Students will learn about seeking and accepting new and difficult challenges to adapt to change.
Speaking of challenges, we are so proud of our school community’s participation in the Great Kindness Challenge last week. We hope that it has inspired all of us, students, staff and community to continue to embrace and spread kindness throughout the year.
Parents and community members, we just happen to have an opportunity for you to show your kindness here by sharing your career with our students. Do you love your job or have an exciting or unique career you’d like to share with our students? If so, please fill in the Career Day Speaker form below and return to Mrs. Yoshida at your earliest convenience.
This first week of February is National School Counseling Week, a great time for us to share our careers as school counselors and remind you of our counseling program here at the Farm. Universally, we meet with all students once a month for classroom lessons focused on the VBCPS Graduate Profile and Citizenship skills as they pertain to academic, career and social/emotional development. We also may meet with small groups for targeted skill building or individually for social/emotional support. If ever you have a question or concern, or wish to know more about our program, please feel free to contact us.

Here Comes the BUS
Beginning Feb. 4, 2019, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) will be implementing an innovative mobile device app and website entitled, Here Comes the Bus®. This application allows parents to view the real-time location of their child’s school bus on any smart device.
Here Comes the Bus enables the parent to:
• See the location of their child’s bus both before and after school.
• Confirm that their child’s bus has arrived at the bus stop, at school or both.
• Receive a notification when the bus is near the child’s stop, has been substituted, or when we
have important information to relay.
Tdap vaccine required for all 6th students
This booster vaccine can provide continued protection from pertussis illness (whooping cough), and is typically given after your child turns 7 years of age.
After your child receives the Tdap vaccine, the documentation should be taken to your child’s elementary school no later than June 14th after that you will need to take it to their Middle School Guidance Office.
The Tdap vaccine may be obtained from the following health care providers;
- private physician or pediatrician
- military clinics
