Cougar Paw Newsletter

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Greetings Cascade View Families and Guardians,
I want to begin this newsletter with a thank you to Families and Guardians for your partnership in supporting your student’s learning goals. We appreciate your communication and support. We are a team and are grateful and honored to learn and teach your student. Thank you, we appreciate you.
April is Mathematics Awareness Month. Math is everywhere in many of the activities and things that we do daily. At home you can add value to math for your students by teaching math with fun games. Some examples include making a game of counting objects like pens or pencils, sorting objects by color, shape, or size. Follow up questions can include why and how they sorted the objects the way they did. Once students understand just how much numbers play a part in our lives, they will see how important it is to succeed in math. We also want to emphasize the importance of reading too because reading allows so many opportunities to learn, share, reflect, think, and create.
i‑Ready is a comprehensive assessment and instruction program with resources to support all students in their learning goals that gives immediate feedback on where students are in their learning. i-Ready has dashboards that have reports with actionable data that gives teachers an understanding of where their students are to support with small groups, reteaching, and whole class instruction. Some of the areas in i-Ready Reading include Phonological Awareness, Phonics, High-Frequency Words, Vocabulary, Comprehension Litersion, Comprehension Informational Text. Some of the areas in iReady Math include Number and Operations, Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry.
Kindergarten -5th grade students have taken the first two diagnostics in iReady and the third diagnostic window opens on April 16, 2023-April 28, 2023. We are excited to celebrate and see the growth of our amazing Cascade View Cougar students as they continue to build upon their learning and show even more critical thinking and creativity.

YOU CAN HELP FIGHT COVID-19, FLU AND RSV!
We are looking for children and households to take part in the CASCADIA Study! It only takes a few minutes to sign up.
Why are we doing this study?
We want to learn more about:
- How often COVID-19, flu, and RSV happen among children and adults
- How well COVID-19 vaccines protect people from COVID infection and illness
Who can take part in this study?
You may qualify for this study if you are:
- 6 months to 49 years of age
- Living in or around Seattle, Washington
You do not need to be vaccinated to participate. Whole households—or just children—can sign up (even if no adults take part).
What would I have to do if I take part?
If you take part, we will ask you to:
- Take a weekly home nasal swab and also tell us if you are feeling sick.
- Visit our clinic one time per year and let us take a small blood sample.
- Answer short surveys online or over the phone.
We will test your swab for COVID-19, flu, and RSV and will give you the results every week!
To thank you for taking part in the study, we are offering compensation.
For more information and to join the study, go to our website:
www.cascadiastudy.org or scan the QR code.
Questions? Email us uwcascadia@uw.edu or call us 206-543-1923.
The CASCADIA Study is being conducted by the Center for Health Research at Kaiser Permanente Northwest and the University of Washington. The study is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Q&A: RSV, FLU, and COVID IN KING COUNTY - WHAT SHOULD I KNOW?
Q: Why is Public Health worried about RSV, flu, and COVID this winter?
A: This fall, there have been many RSV and flu cases requiring emergency room visits – especially for young children. We might also see more COVID cases and hospitalizations this winter as people gather indoors and new COVID variants spread.
These diseases can make young children, older adults, and other vulnerable people very sick, and overload hospitals and clinics.
Q: What is RSV?
A: RSV is a common respiratory virus that spreads every winter. Anyone can get RSV, but this year we’re seeing a lot of cases in young children.
For healthy adults and older children RSV can feel like a cold, with symptoms like runny nose, less appetite, coughing, and fever. But it can be a very serious illness for babies, older adults, and others.
Q: How can I protect myself and others?
A: Stay home if you’re sick—even if you’ve tested negative for COVID-19—because you may have flu or RSV.
Wear a high quality, well-fitting mask in public indoor spaces and wash your hands often to help protect against all three viruses.
Q: Should I get a flu vaccine and an updated COVID booster?
A: Yes! Getting your flu shot and updated COVID booster now will help protect you and avoid needing to visit the hospital. People ages 5 years and older who had their last COVID shot at least 2 months ago can get the updated COVID booster.
Everyone ages 6 months and older should get a flu shot every year. Unfortunately, there is no RSV vaccine available yet.

Purpose:
The intent of the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is to promote transparent and open communicative partnerships between families, students, district and schools in order to support student learning success and positive child/youth development in school, at home and in the community.
Goals:

Title 1 Complaints Process
Here is an overview of the citizen complaint process described fully in Chapter 392-168 WAC, Special Service Programs—Citizen Complaint Procedure for Certain Categorical Federal Programs.
- Find this WAC online: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=392-168.
A citizen complaint is a written statement that alleges a violation of a federal rule, law or regulation or state regulation that applies to a federal program.
- Anyone can file a citizen complaint.
- There is no special form.
- There is no need to know the law that governs a federal program to file a complaint.
STEP 1 Use Your Local Process First
If you have followed the citizen complaint process of your school district, ESD or school service provider (subgrantee) and are unable to reach a satisfactory solution, use this citizen complaint process through OSPI.
STEP 2 File a Citizen Complaint Through OSPI
A citizen complaint must be in writing, signed by the person filing the complaint, and include:
- Contact Information of the Person Filing the Complaint. Your name, address, telephone number and email, if you have one.
- Optional: If someone is helping you to file this citizen complaint, include 1) their contact information, and 2) your relationship to them — for example, family member, a relative, friend or advocate.
- Information About the School District, ESD or School Service Provider You Believe Committed This Violation. Name and address of the school district, ESD or school service provider (subgrantee) you think violated a federal rule, law or regulation or a state regulation that applies to a federal program.
- The Facts — What, Who & When. Include a description of the facts and dates, in general, of when you think the alleged violation happened.
- What specific requirement has been violated?
- When did this violation occur?
- Who you believe is responsible: names of all the people, and the program or organization involved.
- Optional: Did you file a written citizen complaint first with the school district, ESD or school service provider? Although not required by Chapter 392-168 WAC, it is helpful if we can review a copy of your citizen complaint and the results, if any.
- The Resolution You Expect. A proposed solution, if you think you know or have ideas about how the issue can be resolved.
STEP 3 Mail or Fax Your Written Citizen Complaint to OSPI
Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction
Attn: Citizen Complaint-Title I, Part A
P.O. Box 47200
Olympia, WA 98504
Fax: (360) 586-3305
STEP 4 OSPI Staff Process Your Complaint
Once federal program staff at OSPI receive your written complaint, here is what follows:
- OSPI sends a copy of your complaint to the school district, ESD or school service provider (subgrantee).
- The school district, ESD or school service provider begins a formal investigation led by a designated employee.
- The designated employee provides the written response of the investigation to OSPI — within 20 calendar days.
- OSPI staff will send you a copy of the results of the investigation conducted by the
school district, ESD or school provider (subgrantee).
Their response must clearly state one of two results:
- Denial of the allegations in your complaint and the reason for denial.
- Proposal of reasonable actions that will correct the violation.
STEP 5 Final Decision by OSPI
OSPI will send you the final decision in writing within 60 calendar days of the date federal program staff at OSPI received your written complaint — unless exceptional circumstances demand that this investigation take more time.
Here are the steps OSPI staff will follow to reach a final decision:
- Review all the information gathered related to your complaint. The review could include the results of an independent, on-site investigation.
- Decide independently whether or not the district, ESD or school service provider (subgrantee) violated a federal rule, law or regulation or a state regulation that applies to a federal program.
- Provide you with the final decision: Findings of fact, conclusions, and reasonable measures necessary to correct any violation.
- The district, ESD or school service provider (subgrantee) must take the corrective actions OSPI prescribes within 30 calendar days of the final decision.
- A citizen complaint is considered resolved when OSPI has issued a final written decision and corrective measures, if necessary, are complete.
Extend or Waive Timelines
If you as the complainant, and the school district, ESD or school service provider (subgrantee) named in your citizen complaint agree to extend the timelines, this agreement must be in writing and sent to OSPI within 10 calendar days of the date the school district, ESD or school service provider (subgrantee) received notification from OSPI.
