The Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics teamed up with firearm owners, pediatricians and others to create the Partnership for Safety of Children Around Firearms, and a pilot program called Store It Safe, to encourage safe storage of firearms and families to educate their children about safety issues related to firearms.

The goals of the Partnership are to:

  1. Prevent firearm-related, unintentional deaths and suicides among children and teens
  2. Change our approach in talking about firearm safety
  3. Store it Safe and teach children safety around firearms

Big picture

💰 Scholarship Database 💰

In an continued effort to keep everything in one place, this is the Scholarship Database from our Counseling Site. I kept the content from last school year and will be adding to the bottom.

FAFSA

If your student is a senior, October is a big month. The FAFSA (Free Applications for Federal Student Aid) opens on October 1. Seniors and their families are encouraged to file this important form in order to be eligible for funds from the federal governments, state of Ohio as well as some institutional aid. Additionally, completing the FAFSA is often a step in several scholarship applications too. Please visit our FAFSA page and we are updating info (video guide and FAFSA slides) as October 1 approaches.

College Application Blitz (CAB) is back!

The College Application Blitz is put on by our friends in Lakewood Ed Foundation and Get On Track in conjunction with A Call to College at Newark HS. Last year, our event was online and we are excited to bring it back IN PERSON this year.

This event features several colleges that come to LHS but unlike most college fairs, students are to complete their college applications that day. The draw for students is that most campuses are waiving their application fees, which can be up to $60 (looking at you OSUN) for the day.

Be sure to remind your senior to mark their calendars, October 26th 9am to Noon.

Does your student have a job? Did you know they can earn elective credit for that?

Counselors met with students who have jobs or volunteer their time on Friday, September 10th to guide students through the process to earn elective credit for their work hours. Students complete the ODE Work Contract as well as the LHS work contract (paper copies available in the SSC) as well as their Work Contact Info that can be found on our counseling site. All of this information goes to Mr. Mohler, RM 118, our work coordinator. He oversees the Work Program and each year helps several students earn an Ohio Means Jobs Seal towards their graduation path.
