Ott's Outlook

July 2020

Summer is always a busy time for the school district as we finalize plans to kick off the next school year. This summer, however, we find ourselves planning for a very different start of school in August. I know the question on everyone’s mind is what will this look like? The answer is that we honestly don’t know right now.

As guidance is provided by the Texas Education Agency and our local health authorities, we are also seeking input from our families to help guide our planning processes. We launched a parent survey on June 22 that will remain open through July 5 to gather feedback as we begin to try to structure our plans for the start of school.

At this point, Temple ISD is considering both in person and remote learning options for our students next year. How we will manage both delivery models to meet the needs of our students and optimize teacher support is still under development. As a district, we had to pivot very quickly in March and our staff did an incredible job shifting gears to support students through the end of the year in a remote learning model. However, as we look at next year, we know that remote learning will need to look different and will not be the arrangement for every student as it was in the spring. Our remote learning options will have to be more structured to provide daily learning objectives so that we can monitor student progress and growth.

As our plans take shape, there are four main factors that will remain central in our decision-making process:

  1. Public Health
  2. Student Equity
  3. Working Families
  4. Parent Survey Responses

We will keep our staff, students, families and the Temple community updated. We appreciate your continued support and partnership as we adjust to our new normal.

We made some slight revisions to our calendar for the 2020-21 school year to recoup some instructional days for our students. Here is an overview of the adjustments:

  • Our School start date in August remains the same on August 19.

  • The District Professional Development Day originally scheduled for October 26, 2020, will now become a Student Instructional Day.

  • The following campus work days will now become Student Instructional Days: November 9, January 5, February 22, and April 19, 2021.

  • Our School end date in May remains the same on May 27.
