Dear Family,
Your student is learning about area and perimeter and how to solve problems involving both measurements. They will learn how to use formulas to calculate perimeter (P ) and area (A), using measures of length (/) and width (w).
P = (2 × /) + (2 × w) A=/×w
In addition to learning about the perimeter and area of simple rectangular shapes, he or she will also learn how to solve problems involving money.
Here is an activity you can use to help your student understand perimeter and area.
Changing Area and Perimeter
Materials: Piece of string, ruler measuring inches
Step 1 Tie a piece of string into a loop and create a rectangle. Have your student use a ruler to measure the sides to the nearest inch and calculate the perimeter and area.
Step 2 Use the loop to make different-shaped rectangles. Have your student calculate the different perimeters and areas.
