ORCHARD DRIVE ELEMENTARY
MAY 2019
Wilson's Words
Happy May Orchard Drive Families,
As the flowers begin to bloom and the air begins to warm in May, our thoughts drift towards summer and all of the fun activities that we have planned. I encourage all of our students to enjoy their time off but to continue learning for fun outside of school. There are many ways to engage your child in learning that make it fun.
The first way to help support your child’s summer learning is to sign them up for summer school. This is a free program that only requires parents to provide transportation. Sessions will be held at South Elementary from June 4-25. Students will be actively learning but in an enjoyable environment. For more information or an enrollment sheet, please contact our office at 243-5555.
Another way to maintain and continue learning is to read over the summer. We suggest visiting the library with your child to inquire about summer reading programs designed to motivate readers. You may also take a break from the hot summer days and check out a local bookstore. For technology-savvy students, you may have them play learning games on electronic devices or PCs. Simple flash cards can be an easy way to review math facts as well!
In an effort to maintain balanced classrooms, we will be using all available resources, including current and previous teachers’ input, to evenly balance classes. As a parent, should you have any specific educational information you feel we will need to ensure a good placement, please feel free to contact me during the month of May. During the summer months, all principals will be collating all class lists.
In early August, students’ placement will be considered finalized and class lists will be sent by email to parents on August 8. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
It has been a joy serving you and your children. Thank you for your continuous support to Orchard Drive Elementary and Jackson R2 School District.

Dear Families,
I cannot believe it is May and we are nearing the end of another successful school year. As this school year winds down, it is a great time to enroll your child in summer school. This is a free program for children enrolling in Kindergarten through Fourth grade for the fall of 2019. Summer school is a great way to extend your child's learning beyond the normal school year and it provides educational enrichment activities that
expand upon what was taught during the school year. This year our theme is “Disney”. Summer school starts June 4th and runs through June 25th. Orchard students will attend Summer School at South Elementary. Our incoming kindergarten students will choose a morning OR an afternoon session and attend every day June 4- June 25, 2019. The morning kindergarten session will be held from 8:00- 11:10 a.m. The morning kindergarten session is the only session that will have an option to purchase a meal. Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 7:50 a.m. Parents may drop students off no earlier than 7:30 a.m. The afternoon kindergarten session will be 12:00-3:10 p.m. Parents may start dropping off afternoon kindergarten students by 11:45 a.m. Neither morning nor afternoon kindergarten sessions will be served lunch but both kindergarten sessions will be served a snack at no cost to the student. Our incoming first through fourth-grade students will be able to purchase both breakfast and lunch. Parents may drop students off no earlier than 7:30 in the mornings. Incoming first through fourth-grade classes attend 8:10 a.m. - 3:10 p.m.

We've learned a lot of great things in the library this year including Digital Citizenship, author studies, book genres, coding and more! Ask your child about a favorite read aloud they heard or favorite Makerspace activity.
It is very important to continue reading over the summer. Don't forget to utilize the Riverside Regional Library and enjoy lots of books over the break!

Our 3rd and 4th-grade classes are in the process of completing MAP testing. The dates are April 30th through May 3rd. Testing is being done in the mornings, so if your child has a need for any appointments, please have them scheduled in the afternoon.
