A Letter from Lynn

This month we pause to acknowledge you -- the educators who traversed these crazy times to do everything in your power to make sure your students were successful, safe, and fed in mind, body and spirit.

There was no roadmap for how to stay focused on learning and lead a child to success in these strange learning conditions…but as educators found pathways by facing every day with courage and creativity.

You knew that lives depended on you, as teachers, as guides, as monitors of safety. And you got the job done with tenacity and grace. Thank you, doesn’t seem to convey all that is in our hearts.

With gratitude,

Lynn McKahan, M.A.

SST 1 Director

The Future Depends on Teachers

"The responsibility for educating a young person is not the student's responsibility alone, nor is it the job of the teacher alone, nor is it the obligation of the parents alone.

It is a responsibility that belongs to all of us.

Because we all reap the benefits when our citizens are well-educated."

{ Dr. Jill Biden, First Lady of the United States }

The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services offers the ABCs of Mental Health as a way to check in with your feelings and learn potential signs of mental health issues. Take a moment to review the ABCs, and be sure to take care of yourself.
If you feel you are struggling with all the twists and turns of the last year, you are not alone. With so much happening in our world in just a few months, it feels like we have been on a roller coaster. While each of us are experiencing the ride a differently, we are certainly strapped in together.

With Ohio's CareLine, someone is available to talk 24/7. So if you or someone you care about are feeling worn down, overwhelmed, or frustrated or many of the other emotions this tumultuous year has brought - - help is available.

Take 5 for Yourself

You deserve a break! You may not be able to spend a week on the beach right now, but you can take a few moments for yourself. Whenever you are feeling a bit stressed Take 5. We suggest:

1. Completing a mindfulness meditation, like this one from Goodful.

2. Stepping outside for 5 minutes (no phone!) and enjoy the fresh air.

3. Cranking up the music and dance. This tune always lifts us up!

4. Grabbing a pen and doodling. Need some inspiration?

5. Setting a timer for 5 minutes and decluttering your desk.

Follow us on Twitter for daily Take 5 ideas during the month of May.
