Shadowlawn Scoop
School Newsletter January 2023
Message from Principal Eliason
Shadowlawn would like to extend it's heartfelt thanks to the Collier Building Industry Association for gifting ALL Shadowlawn students with presents this holiday season. It's so magical to watch the stage curtains open and the students faces light up when they see all the toys on stage! Many thanks to all of the other groups, organizations, and individuals who contributed to toy drives and gift giving to our students, you made some very special holidays for our students.
Please mark your calendars for our next evening family event which is a sports-themed Family Literacy Night on January 24th from 5:30-7:00. We've had a great turn out for our Science & Math family nights and we're excited to invite you for an evening to celebrate literacy.
We are nearly half way through the school year as our second quarter comes to a close on Thursday January 12th with Report Cards being published on January 23rd. We are so proud of all the great learning our students have done and are grateful for your continued support with school at home.
Wishing you a wonderful 2023!

Be on the lookout for a flyer coming home explaining our dress-up days and family literacy night.
Car Pick Up Procedure
- If you need a car tag, please ask a staff member working the car line and we will give you one.
- A car tag is required to pick your child up in the car line.
2. Once your child is in the car please turn the car tag around or take it down so that we know the child is in the car.
Please ensure that you are following these procedures so our car line will move efficiently.
Communication Corner
This is an activity calendar for the month of January. It has short speech and language exercises to do with your child every day!
Twin Mattresses Available
In December we were able to distribute nearly 100 twin bed sets including bedding to Shadowlawn students and their siblings thanks to many generous donors and a loving community.
We were gifted additional twin mattresses that still need a home. If you, your extended families, or your neighbors are in need of a twin mattress please call the school at 377-8400 with your request and to schedule a pick up. We have 27 mattresses that are available first come, first serve. Unfortunately, these do not come with frames or bedding.

First Grade
First grade motivational chart to encourage success with iReady lessons!”
Second Grade
Second grade students used the Conga Line to talk through the Connect for Success shares when we talked about Kindness this week.
Third Grade Fraction Fun
Third graders had a great time learning about fractions this month. They used a variety of activities to explore how to represent and write about unit fractions as parts of a whole, fractions greater than one, and whole numbers as fractions.
Fourth Grade
4th graders in Mr. Masiello’s class have been exploring how to compare and order fractions with unlike denominators. As a unit review they got to compare the fractional ingredients in various hot cocoa recipes. It was a fun day in “Cafe Masiello
5th Grade
5th grade students in Mrs. Georges’ math class combine their division of decimal skills and their creativity. The students made a winter reef using the answers to their division problems. They are super focused on their amazing creations!
Fifth grade students experimenting to better understand bird beak adaptations as we finish up our animal and plant adaptation and survival unit in Science.
Physical Education
In PE we were working on our shooting and dribbling skill to play the game of basketball.
Music
Recently in music, the third graders performed a selection of music that represented the cultures reflecting many of the students for the SLE World Cultures Concert. At the beginning of the unit, the third-grade classes were polled to select music that would represent their/their family’s cultures. Once the numbers were tallied, songs were selected from the countries that had the most student representation. Once the songs were selected, third grade began working very hard to learn the songs from the countries of the United States of America, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, and Haiti. They learned how to sing in different languages and learned dances for many weeks and were eager to share what they learned with their families. I am very proud of their hard work and wonderful performance!
Technology
Students are using coding to solve puzzles to get their objects in the right order to complete the puzzle. Using the learning goal "I apply strategies to understand and solve problems using technology to develop and test solutions" students are able to apply the skills needed to evaluate the problem and develop a solution.
Art
Students in grades 2-5 have been working on their practice drawings and ides for the Keep Collier Beautiful calendar contest for 2024.
