Dear Neighbors and Friends,
It was great to see so many of you enjoying the sunny weather, arts and crafts, inflatables and picnic at community celebration of the Forging the Future campaign. And then again, two days later for Hood's annual neighbors' breakfast. For those unable to attend the breakfast, I delayed sending this email to include access to my presentation and a recap of the updates:
- Enrollment numbers and new academic programs
- Partnerships, including the new basketball team for Frederick
- Benefits and access for neighbors
- Carson Cottage and Strawn Cottage to be razed in the spring to connect gravel lot with Chapel lot; increased parking and additional sidewalks for pedestrian safety
- Memorial Hall renovations to be completed before end of semester
- Volunteers for the community garden -- we will share information in the spring or you can reach out to April Boulton, dean of the Grad School
- Hood Hello
I hope you'll be able to join us for Safe Harvest later this month. It's one of my favorite Hood traditions.
Best,
Andrea E. Chapdelaine, Ph.D.
President
Safe Harvest | Thursday, October 26, 4:30-8 p.m.
Safe Harvest, a tradition at Hood College for more than 30 years, is a student-led event to offer Frederick families a safe alternative to trick-or-treating. Student organizations will host games, arts and crafts, and other entertainment. Student will lead groups of children* through the residential quad to trick-or-treat at the residence halls.
Safe Harvest will be held on Thursday, Oct. 26 in the Whitaker Campus Center. Activities and games start at 4:30. The first trick-or-treat group leaves at 5 p.m.; the last at 7:30 p.m. Additionally, the Hood College Gear Shop will be open.
* Parents or guardians are required to accompany their children throughout the evening.
The event is sponsored by the Hood College Chapter of the Mortar Board honor society, a National Senior Honor Society promoting service, leadership and scholarship among college seniors nationwide.
Hood Hello
The "Hood hello" is another tradition, where each member of the community acknowledges another when they cross paths. They say hello. They may just smile and nod. The Hood hello helps create community on campus. I bring this up for a very specific reason.
From time to time, our students inquire about "closing off" campus to outsiders. Given the recent shootings at Morgan State and Bowie State, you can imagine the anxiety they are feeling. Although, as a private property, it is something we could do, it is not consistent with our commitment to being good neighbors and a part of this great community. Further, I do believe that your presence on campus makes it safer. However to help ensure that our students feel comfortable in their home, I ask your assistance.
When you see someone on campus, please say hello. Smile. Nod. Wave. Be a part of the campus community. Also, If you see something that is amiss, call campus safety at 301-696-3548 or 301-696-3111 for emergencies. And do keep in mind that this is our students’ home.
