Celebrating the Class of 2020
TCS Seniors and Families:
This week, we heard from Gov. Kay Ivey as she discussed plans to re-open Alabama. I am sure as a member of the Class of 2020 or family member, you listened for clues on what that could mean for graduation. I did, too. Yesterday, I participated in a conference call with state superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey who shared the Alabama Department of Education's guidance on graduation.
Here's what I learned:
The state is not providing clearance to hold graduations in May or June. However, they are telling us that July is a slight possibility. In keeping with the survey from last week where seniors and their families indicated they would prefer an actual graduation ceremony, we will continue to reserve the tentative dates of July 25-26 for graduation events, provided state guidelines allow them to proceed. If we are not able to have a ceremony in July, we will look at other options beyond that time that would be permitted and safe.
I share your disappointment that next week's scheduled graduation cannot happen, but we are committed to ensuring that your achievement during these unprecedented times does not go unnoticed. Our desire remains to provide you with the graduation so many of you and your classmates want.
In the meantime, we will continue to celebrate the efforts of the class of 2020. In the coming days, your principal will communicate with you the opportunities we have for senior celebrations as we grow closer to the planned commencement exercises.
