Weekly Update #41
Weekly Message!
Week of May 17th
WMES Parents/Guardians,
Happy Saturday! We had another fantastic week of school. The end of the year is quickly approaching. The last day of school for Pre-K is June 11, 2021. Teachers will be scheduling conferences to discuss student progress. The last day of school for TCPS students is scheduled for Thursday, June 17th, which is also an early dismissal day. I have included a link to the 2021-2022 school year calendar for your reference as well.
Quarter 4 interims were emailed home to students in grades 3-5 yesterday. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions about missing assignments or grades. Since this is just an interim, students still have until the end of the quarter to improve their grades.
Also, just a reminder that we are still selling yearbooks and they are selling very quickly. A flyer came home last week in case you want to order one. Also, all fifth grade students will receive one free due to a generous donor.
For those who are interested, the Out of Area Request form will only be available from April 1-June 1. The County will not accept late applications. All students must reapply each year and placement is not guaranteed. The online form can be found on the TCPS website or by following this link:
https://www.tcps.k12.md.us/search?search_paths%5B%5D=&query=out+of+area+request&submit=Search

The Reading Corner
It's not hard to help your students keep their interest in reading and learning. Students learn through a variety of activities, and almost everything we do presents an opportunity to read. When you're eating breakfast, read the cereal box; if you're in a restaurant, read the menu. Read the newspaper with your children and discuss what's happening in the world.
Here are a few activities that involve reading and related skills. There's no special order, and you don't have to do everything listed. Just pick the ones that look interesting and fun!
Pick an important news event from another city, state, or country. Find as much information on the topic as possible, read newspapers, listen to the radio, and watch TV news. Talk about what you learned.
Word game! Look for out-of-state license plates. Make a list of all the state names and slogans. Decide which ones you like the best. Ask friends and relatives which are their favorites.
What museums are close to your house? Are there any old, historic buildings in the area? Find these places on a map. Find out what is on exhibit at the museums and why the old buildings are important.
Go back in time and pretend you lived in or did business in the oldest building in your area. Write a story about how you spent your time.
WMES Field Day Info.
Field Day(S)
2020-21 WMES Field Day(S) Activities scheduled for the weeks of:
May 24-28
June 1-4
June 7-11
It has been an unusual educational year. We have been in person, hybrid, A Day, B-Day, and even C Day. It has been hard on all of us trying to keep some sense of predictability. In hopes of maintaining expectations, I’d like to send a message out about Field Day(S)! Yes, that is an (S) at the end of Day, which means there will be multiple days in the field.
For WMES, those dates are May 24-27, June 1-3 (Memorial Day is Monday), and June 7-11.
Field Day activities will be:
1. conducted during PE class time
2. performed outside (weather and activity-dependent)
Please come to school on Field Day(S) ready to participate with sunscreen, water bottles, comfortable shoes, and activity-appropriate clothing as needed.
We cannot have the traditional Field Day with families or volunteers participating along with the students. Still, there are activities on my FROG page under Field Day that each family can perform together. If those activities are conducted at home, please share pictures and messages on the page or via email to their teachers or me.
I am looking forward to these Field Day(S) as they are a marker that the school year is coming to an end and SUMMER VACATION BEGINS!

PBIS Parent Corner
White Marsh Elementary implements school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to improve social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes for all of our students. We are recognizing students who are RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, and SAFE through Positive Office Referrals.
PBIS- Here at WMES, we reinforce being Responsible, Respectful, and Safe. Here is one way you can practice being respectful with your child at home:
Be Respectful by using Kind Language
Describe what kind of language does (and does not) sound like in your home. Demonstrate kind language and ask children to practice a kind language with you. Remind At the start of the day and each new activity where kind language is expected, remind kids to be kind. For example, “Playing games together is fun, and let’s remember to be kind with our words.”
