iPad Apps in a K-12 Classroom
5 apps that can be used for educational purposes
Toucheable Earth
This app could be used when learning about different cultures in the class. Because it is interactive and has detailed information about different countries, cultures and customs, it could be incorporated into an activity for a lesson, or even as a resource for a project.
SkyORB
Functions as a 3D real-time representation of the planets position around the sun, the ability to hold your device and point toward a visible star and planet and reveal the name by tracking the GPS position, compass orientation, the elevation from the gyroscope, warn the user when a phenomenon is occurs as a full moon, a planet really visible, which is worth the observation.
This would be a great app to assist in learning about planets in a classroom. It could be incorporated to give students a realistic visual of not only which planet is which, but to be able to have a visual of where it is when they look up at the sky.
TapToTalk
In a K-12 setting, this app would be very useful for any students that may be non-verbal. It could be used to communicate between student and student, and student and teacher. This could be easily incorporated into a classroom that is equipped with an iPad. As long as the student has access to the tablet, it is a great tool for reducing barriers amongst non verbal students.
Teacher Kit
TeacherKit helps you organize classes and students easily. Create a seating chart, record attendance, log behavior, and track grades all with few taps. TeacherKit is a great alternative to routine administration.
Because teachers are an important part of the classroom, a tool designed to help them can also benefit the students. This app helps organize everything. You can import your class roster, and use it to mark attendance, add grades, notes, and even track behaviour. All at your fingertips. It could be a great resource for educators to use to stay organized and on top of the administrative duties.
Sight Words for Reading
This could be incorporated for learning to read in the classroom. It could be used to further assist children who need a little extra support when it comes to reading, or as a tool for students to test their knowledge or brush up on their sight words. This would be an app I might suggest to a reading tutor, or that I might set up a child with to practice and try to reduce the barriers where it comes to reading.
