March News

Spring is just around the corner and TMS is abuzz with activity throughout the month of March. Volleyball is in full swing (pun intended), the arts department will feature several performances throughout the month, including our annual TMS Arts Gala on March 29, and Spring Conference week falls at the end of the month. Stay tuned regarding schedules and how you can sign up for a conference.


Now is a good time to make sure your contact info is up-to-date. If you need to make any changes to addresses, emails or phone numbers, please contact our registrar, Sally Riddle, at (360) 709-7503.


Black Hills High School counselors visited our 8th grade Firewolves on February 28 to discuss class offerings and the requirements for high school graduation. Scheduling begins tomorrow, March 1 and will continue through Thursday, March 2. If you are the caring adult of a current 8th grader, please make sure to attend the Black Hills Class of 2027 Welcome Night at BHHS from 6-7:30 tonight. The meeting begins in the PAC.

Fred Meyer Rewards

We have some good news! Our PTO is now part of the Fred Meyer Community Rewards! Please consider adding us to your Fred Meyers Reward card. When you log into the website scroll all the way to the bottom and find Community, then Fred Meyer Community Rewards. You can do this on your phone too, but not on the App. Search the name or code, and click enroll. Super easy!

Here is some information from Fred Meyer on how the process works:

To Use the Fred Meyer Community Rewards Program:
Simply encourage your participants to visit https://www.fredmeyer.com. Once logged into their Fred Meyer account they can search for Tumwater Middle School PTO either by name or CF291 and then click Enroll. New users will need to create an account which requires some basic information, a valid email address and a rewards card.

*Customers must have a registered Fred Meyer rewards card account to link to your organization.
*If a member does not yet have a Fred Meyer rewards card, please let them know they are available at the customer service desk at any Fred Meyer

REMEMBER, purchases will not count for your organization until after your participants register their rewards card.
Participants must swipe their registered Fred Meyer rewards card or use the phone number that is related to their registered Fred Meyer rewards card when shopping for each purchase to count.

When do they play?

Do you need the most updated sports schedules for your student athlete? All current sports schedules and team information is located on Arbiter, which you can access HERE.


You can also find the link via the Activities/Athletics link on the TMS website. From the athletics page, click on "2022-2023 Sports Schedules" on the left side of the page and then find the arbiter link at the top of the sports table.

Firewolf Bites

Irish Soda Bread

This recipe is based on the one my Irish mother learned in school, thanks to the cooking textbook All in the Cooking. It's about as simple as bread gets—four ingredients, one bowl, about five minutes to bring together and less than an hour in the oven. If you love soda bread, it's worth seeking out Irish flour like Odlum's or King Arthur's Irish-Style Flour, since that contributes to the taste, but any all-purpose flour will work fine here.

Ingredients


  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (16 ounces)

  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 ½ to 2 cups buttermilk, shaken

  • Good butter, such as Kerrygold, for serving


Directions


  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F, and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda until well combined. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in 1 1/2 cups buttermilk.


  2. Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix the ingredients until a loose dough forms. You're looking for a dough that's soft but not overly sticky or wet, and that holds together enough to make a loaf that can hold its shape on the sheet pan. If the dough is dry and crumbly, add up to 1/2 cup additional buttermilk, a tablespoon or so at a time, until it comes together.


  3. When the dough is just mixed together—no streaks of flour or buttermilk—transfer it to the parchment-lined sheet pan. Using your hands, form the dough into a round that's roughly 8 inches in diameter. Using a paring knife, cut a large "X" across the top of the loaf. Bake until soda bread is nicely browned, and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom of the loaf, about 45 minutes. Let cool on the baking sheet until just warm, then slice and eat with good butter. To store, wrap in a slightly damp tea towel to prevent the crust from getting too hard, and keep on the counter.
