1st Poem
The Meadow
Kate Knapp Johnson
Half the day lost, staring(A)
at this window. I wanted to know(B)
just one true thing(C)
about the soul, but I left thinking(D)
for thought, and now -(E)
two inches of snow have fallen(F)
over the meadow. Where did I go,(G)
how long was I out looking(H)
for you?, who would never leave me,(I)
my withness, my here.(J)
This poem is Free Verse
The tone of the poem in my opinion is depressing, because it sounds like someone had left there home searching for something, only later to realize that what she was looking for was right there at home.
I think the theme is that home is where the heart is. I feel like this is the theme because this person left searching for something they could never find. After they had returned home, they realized they were gone for so long. In the poem it says I left thinking for thought. But it seems that they soon came back and they realize what they've done and look out the window as the snow falls over the meadow. This person learned after they left to do some soul searching that they belonged where the heart was, home.
2nd Poem
The Road Not Taken
Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,(A)
And sorry I could not travel both(B)
And be one traveler, long I stood(A)
And looked down one as far as I could(A)
To where it bent in the undergrowth;(B)
Then took the other, as just as fair,(C)
And having perhaps the better claim,(D)
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;(C)
Though as for that the passing there(C)
Had worn them really about the same,(D)
And both that morning equally lay(E)
In leaves no step had trodden black.(F)
Oh, I kept the first for another day!(E)
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,(E)
I doubted if I should ever come back.(F)
I shall be telling this with a sigh(G)
Somewhere ages and ages hence:(H)
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—(G)
I took the one less traveled by,(G)
And that has made all the difference.(H)
The tone of this poem is deliberate. I think that the tone is deliberate because in this poem Frost clearly states And that has made all the difference. So he chose to go down the road himself.

I think that the theme is that you should go your own way. This person had a choice of what road to go down. One trail had most of the grass worn because many people go down that path. However the other path was still very grassy because many do not travel down that path. He states that you have one time to make the choice of which road to choose. You can never go back to that moment when you get to decide where to go. The person chose to go down the road less travled, and that has made a difference because he went his own way. He had made his own decision in his life for what he truly wanted to do.
