All School Read Aloud - 2/1/23 - National Read Aloud Day!
Since diverse books can serve both as mirrors and windows of different human emotions and experiences, they offer a powerful opportunity to build community, increase students' empathy, and push back against bias and prejudice.
On February 1, 2023, our entire school will join in for a read aloud. The Nixon Equity Committee has worked in partnership with staff to choose books that incorporate diverse topics. When reading, children will discuss the content of the story with their teachers. Please find a listing of the books chosen for the read aloud below:
Kindergarden - “Skin Like Mine” by Perry, LaTashia M. Topic: Race and Culture
Grade 1 - “Proudest Blue” by Muhammad, Ibtihaj Topic: Family Traditions and Culture
Grade 2 - “Let’s Talk About Race” by Lester, Julius - Topic: Race and Culture

A Message from the Nixon Health Office
Dear Nixon Families,
The Health Office is seeing a wide variety of illnesses in students. Colds, “stomach bugs”, influenza, strep throat, and COVID-19 are circulating in the community.
We have seen an uptick in COVID-19 cases again. Please let Mrs. Griffin know if your child tests positive for COVID-19 so she can provide you with an isolation timeline for your student: katelyn_griffin@sudbury.k12.ma.us
Please continue to follow SPS Illness guidelines for ANY illness:
If your student has a fever over 100 degrees, please keep them home until the fever has been resolved for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (i.e. Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.).
If your student has any vomiting or diarrhea, please keep them home until they have not had an episode of either symptom for at least 24 hours.
If your student is diagnosed with a bacterial illness (i.e. strep throat) they must stay home for 24 hours after antibiotics have been initiated. Until then, they are contagious.
If your student is experiencing cold symptoms with the absence of fever, they may still attend school if they are able to manage their secretions in class.
If frequent nose blowing, coughing, or other symptoms will impact their ability to learn and concentrate in class, it is best to keep them home until symptoms are more mild and manageable for a school day.
Let’s keep Nixon School Healthy!
Clothing Supply in the Nurse’s Office:
A small supply of donated clothing is kept in the nurse’s office if/when your child needs to change during the school day. I am running very low on bottoms. If your child has outgrown leggings or sweatpants in good condition, I would gladly accept your donation!
Thank you!
