BRIAN HURLEY'S SKILL-WILL MATRIX AT WEST
On Monday, November 22nd, Brian Hurley, Instructional Coach, presented to the Proviso West faculty a "skill-will matrix." This matrix helps teachers identify specific interventions for class failure based on a student's skill level as well as his/her/their motivation ("will").
If the student has "low skill, high will," teachers can provide additional practice exercises and alternative assessments to help the student reach mastery. For "high skill, low will" students, assignments can be bundled into one project with rigor. Students with "low skill and low motivation" may need socioemotional support and other schools social worker and counselor interventions. Finally, if a student has "high skill and high will" and is still failing, the issue may be attendance, one F on a major assignment, or something else. The teacher would need to dig deeper to figure it out.
By asking "Why?" instead of "What?" teachers can demonstrate curiosity rather than presumption. They can peel back the onion, so to speak, and find out what is preventing the student from being successful in their class. By approaching students as individuals and personalizing their learning, teachers can demonstrate empathy, compassion, understanding, and an effective action plan to help students pass their class and address their needs.
Brian Hurley provided current data from PowerSchool to help demonstrate the differences between a student with a 59% and no absences and a student with a 20% F and 15 absences. "There are two very different things going on between these two kids," Hurley said. "Let's approach them differently to get better results."
Joe Kosina, Grade Level Principal, acknowledged that many teachers are already doing this at Proviso West, and he applauds them for it. He rallied: "Let's all get on board to help our scholars!"
