Second Step in Leander ISD
Social Skills Learning is recognized as a key ingredient for school and life success. To meet the needs of our students and teach specific social skills, Leander ISD has adopted the Second Step curriculum for all elementary schools.
The overall goal of Social Skills Learning is to increase student instructional time by helping students stay on task and decrease behaviors impacting learning.
Second Step lessons begin for most grade levels the first week of September.
August-Back to School
Our back to school Second Step theme is "our school as a welcoming place where every student feels like he or she belongs". In morning announcements and school assemblies, students will be reminded to welcome others and act and speak in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. In addition students will be reminded or introduced to specific school expectations.
September-Skills for Learning
During the month of September elementary campuses will be focusing on skills for learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. In morning announcements and school assembly, students will be reminded of these skills, which help students be successful learners.
Practice Outside of School
Support your child at home in welcoming others and acting and speaking in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. Please tell your child’s teacher or counselor if you have questions about specific ways you can help your child with these behaviors at home.
Second Step lessons teach skills for learning. Use the Home Links below describing why these skills are important and including fun activities to do with your child to practice them. Click on each lesson to view the available Home Link activities.
Please note, due to specific campus events, some campuses may not be covering all of these lessons this month.
We hope you enjoy them!
