The G.W. Gazette

May 2021 Edition

May is a time for celebration in schools and we certainly have SO much to celebrate this year!

Our students and teachers have worked very hard to be present during a time of uncertainty. When many schools had only virtual learning or no school at all, we put many safety measures in place so that our students and staff could be at school together. We were able to accommodate those families that did not feel safe sending their students to school during a pandemic and continue their education at home. Every member of our school community has put their own health and safety on the line this year to educate our children. If you get the opportunity, please say thank you!

Here are some special days to celebrate:

May 1 - School Principal's Day

May 3-7 Teacher Appreciation Week (we also celebrate our Paraprofessionals)

May 4 - National Teacher Appreciation Day

May 6 - School Nurse's Day

May 7 - School Lunch Hero Day

I would also like to recognize our school bus drivers and custodians who work to provide safe environments for our students to attend school. THANK YOU ALL!!!

Wishing everyone a marvelous month,

Mrs. Heather Davis

We are always looking to expand our fine arts programs and give our students opportunities beyond the classroom. Students in 4th and 5th grade will have the opportunity to see and hear some of the instruments that will be available for them to play in band. A select group of Middle School and High School band members will be coming over with our band directors, Krystal Bottorff and Joel Knipe, to show and play their instruments.

As part of our PE curriculum, our 5th graders will participate in a track meet at Calvert Stadium on May 12, 2021 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Parents are welcome to attend and cheer on their students! Be looking for a letter coming home soon with your student.

Students can submit up to THREE bingo cards (after being approved by their teacher) to be entered into a drawing for a fun basket!

Please help support your child with continued good reading habits through the end of the school year! Also, be looking for a summer reading challenge to be sent home with students!

From Mr. Coovert...

It is almost the end of the school year. In this last month of the school year I wanted to focus on two different topics that all of our students struggle with at least some of the time. The first topic is controlling strong emotions. Our 4th graders have been learning how to do this by thinking of a stop signal, naming their feeling, and calming down (deep breathing and counting).

Our 5th graders will be learning about digital drama and what to do when it happens to them. The lesson is titled Digital Drama Unplugged (Grade 6) and can be found on the website is a website dedicated to helping parents get information on what their children do and watch online. If you go to their website they have reviews for TV, movies, Youtubers, video games, apps, and many articles for parents to read about everything digital. It is a great website and worth checking out if you have never done so before.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you have any questions, concerns, or need any assistance from me do not hesitate to reach out. I would be happy to help in any way I can.
