PĀNUI HARAREI - HOLIDAY UPDATE
Gladstone School Newsletter - 22/7/22
Te Karere a te Tumuaki (Principal's Message)
Kia ora tātou katoa (Hi/greetings/hello everybody). We are very much looking forward to the start of Term 3 on Monday. The term starts with a welcome assembly for Isabella Crick; Bryn Hartley-Meilink & River McPheat (NE students). We are also welcoming back Emil Chamberman (Y2) who has been living in Sweden.
Over the holidays we were sad to hear that our Te Wharau bus driver Colin Howie, passed away on the 13th of July. A card and donation to Te Omanga Hospice have been sent of behalf of the staff, students & whānau of Gladstone School. Thank you to those Te Wharau families who attended Colin's service.

Thank you to the Huck Whānau for donating 2 lovely new pets to the school. Rose and Tulip the bunny rabbits are all settled in and looking forward to some cuddles during the term. We have our fingers crossed that we might have better luck keeping these new pets alive. Kaylee Huck has very kindly written a book about rabbits that has lots of great information in it - you can have a read by clicking on the link below. Thanks also to the Orsborn Whānau for continuing to supply pet feed for our animals - very much appreciated.
Masks
As you will have seen from our app alert, masks have been reintroduced for the first 4 weeks of Term 3. It is now required that all students Y4 and above wear a mask indoors (including at assembly). This will be reviewed at the end of the 4 weeks. Please see below a letter sent out to schools from the Ministry of Education.
We know that some of our tamariki/ākonga are exempt from wearing a mask. If they have an exemption card or a letter from their health provider, or we have agreed that mask wearing is not practicable for them, we will support them to not wear a mask. The process for obtaining mask exemptions changed on the 9th June 2022. Parents will need to send through exemption cards or letters to the school.
FoGS - Complex Quiz Night Catering
Hi all. With the Gladstone Complex Quiz night fast approaching FoGS are looking for help towards the supper that we are providing for the night. Quiz night is FRIDAY 5th AUGUST, so we are looking for people keen to help:
- On the day preparing for the evening
- On the night serving etc
- Baking a sweet treat for the night
- or making a donation to the fogs account to cover some costs.

This is a great fundraiser for the school, and the more help we get, the more we make. It has always been a really fun day/night in the past so if you are keen to help we would love you to!
If you would like to help in any way - big or small please let me know. Thanks so much in advance Hayley Quirke hayley@quirke.org.nz
3 Way Conferences (Parent-Teacher-Child Interviews)
Mid Year reports went home on the last Wednesday of Term 2. We are aware that many of the attendance percentages result in an 'Of Concern' grading. We do know that many students have been sick during the first half year and that it can't be helped. We are required to report on attendance by the MoE so please treat it as an FYI. It is also important to keep attendance in mind when looking at progress and achievement. Please check your child's bag for their report or let us know if you haven't received it yet.
The booking link for our upcoming 3 Way Conferences can be found below - the 'Event Code' is: 2nybj. Tuesday 9th August; Wednesday 10th August; Thursday 11th August. These conferences are a perfect opportunity to discuss student progress and achievement and any other matters. We like having students at the interviews so that everyone in the learning partnership can be present, however if you would prefer for your child not to come please contact their team leader to let them know.
COVID +ve Case Tracking
If a person develops new COVID-19 symptoms, and it’s 29 days or more since their previous infection, it’s possible that it’s a reinfection with COVID-19 and they should take a rapid antigen test. If that test is positive, they will need to isolate for a second time for seven days. The 3 month 'grace period' if you have had COVID is no longer valid.
In order to maintain our tracking of how affected we have been by COVID, we ask that whānau email the office@gladstone1.school.nz with the date of a positive student COVID result. This includes if your child tested positive over the holidays. Thanks for your help with this.
End of Day Pick Up
Pick up at the end of the school day will continue to be by Gibson Hall. Masks are not required when picking students up outside.
