This Week at MHS
Here's what's happening September 20-24th!
Dear MHS Parents and Students,
Welcome to Homecoming week! It is that time of year when we welcome back alumni to celebrate all the Maryville represents within this community. It is also a chance for dress up days, a Homecoming Parade, and a Homecoming Dance. It is a whole school effort this week to celebrate our current students and our MHS Alumni!
Our Homecoming Parade will be starting near the Junior High (9:40am) and moving up Cedar Street and Lawrence Ave. Our students will be lining the streets to cheer on the floats, sports teams, clubs, and homecoming court. A huge shout out to the Maryville Police Department for their willingness to support a return to the homecoming parade! We also want to thank MJHS and SHE for joining in the festivities.
Are you a person who picks up your student at the end of the day? We know that dismissal can be a very busy time of the day and we appreciate your patience as we move cars as quickly as possible. We do have many students returning from Dual Enrollment courses at Pellissippi and Maryville College at the end of the day for their extra-curricular activities. Please refrain from waiting in a parking spot for your student and continue to use the line in front of the gym. Thank you!
Are you looking for a dinner idea this week? Our MHS Band is holding a fundraiser at Mr. Gattis this Thursday night from 5:30-8:30pm. The band receives a portion of the proceeds for the food that night. Come out - enjoy dinner - and support our band!
Wishing everyone a great week at Dear Old Maryville High!
Parents - we request your assistance!
Our schools, along with other area and national school districts, are experiencing an uptick in vandalism and theft due to a promotion on the Tik Tok App called “Devious Licks.” The promotion or “digital dare” is focused on encouraging students to steal property from their schools and capture the actions through video and/or photos and to post online. Our schools have experienced vandalism and theft of soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, personal items from teachers’ desks, and costly damage to school property. In response, we are issuing consequences with citations of theft and vandalism as well as school punishments. Parents and guardians, please talk with your students about this unfortunate fad. Help convey the seriousness of students making poor choices and taking actions of vandalism and theft. It would also be a good time to discuss the consequences that occur through the promotion of social media by helping students process being a good and safe consumer of digital information and material. COUNSELOR'S CORNER
This week is TN College Application Week at MHS! This statewide initiative is designed to bring awareness to the college application process and should involve all students, not just our senior class. School counselors have several activities scheduled including "college chats" with classroom teachers, working with students on applications at lunch and of course, everyone's favorite: The College Fight Song Challenge!! Please partner with us and ask your child about that day's activities as we raise awareness for post-secondary education.
Maryville College will host the Blount County College Fair on Wednesday, September 29 from 5:30-7:00 pm. This in-person college fair will allow high school students and their parents to connect with over 50 colleges, universities, technical schools and art schools so that you can get the information you need during your college search. Afterwards from 7:00 – 8:00 pm, parents are invited to join Maryville College Financial Aid staff to learn tips and tricks on navigating the financial aid process no matter what college the student chooses. Please register for this event at https://apply.maryvillecollege.edu/register/BCCF-2021
The Blount County Youth Court is looking for volunteer jurors. Teenagers who volunteer to sit on the Youth Court decide the sentence for other teens who admitted to committing a first time, non-violent offense. Youth Court volunteers are trained to base their sentences on the Principles of Restorative Justice. Volunteers learn about court procedures, sentencing options, trial techniques, structure of the justice system, the meaning of justice and relationships between rights and responsibilities. For more information visit: blountcountyyouthcourt.org.
Parents of seniors: your child must electronically sign the FERPA Waiver and release of records in their SCOIR account BEFORE we can send their transcripts and other documents to colleges. The "get more out of SCOIR" screen appears when your child logs in to the system. Follow the prompts to sign the FERPA Waiver.
