Monthly Social Emotional Lessons
Once a month, I will do a classroom lesson with all students to work on self-regulation and emotional control skills. These monthly lessons will begin in September. I am using a curriculum called "The Zones of Regulation" by Leah M. Kuypers. One of the big ideas is to help students recognize what emotions they are experiencing and learn how to use different coping strategies to change or handle their emotions. Some of the benefits include:
1. Students gaining an increased vocabulary of emotional terms
2. Learning to read others facial expressions
3. Recognize how others see and react to their behavior
4. Recognize events that trigger their behaviors
5. Learn healthy coping strategies
6. Gain problem solving skills.

Zones
Red Ribbon Week is a time that schools commit to creating a healthy, drug free future for America. Red Ribbon Week originated in 1985 when Federal Agent, Enrique Camarena gave his life in the fight against drugs. Mr. Camarena's death touched the nation deeply. People felt his sacrifice should not be forgotten. As a result, the red ribbon became a symbol to reduce the demand for drugs. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to educate children and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Each year the Red Ribbon Week Campaign chooses a new theme, this year the theme is “Drug Free Looks Like Me.” I will do classroom lessons with all grades to focus on making healthy choices in and out of school and staying drug free.
